I find the US party politics system quite difficult to fathom in comparison to ours. I'm not suggesting it's better or worse. But it seems the Party is less influential there than here, where the party platform is set in stone, and any deviation will see an MP admonished for disloyalty.

It's like Canada and Britain that way. Individual congressmen and senators are less likely to tow the party line in the US, because the executive branch is separate. Trudeau and Scheer sign their candidates nomination papers. The loyalty here is to the party leader and not constituents.
