I wasn't sure what a goanna is..

They are large lizards.

Anonymous

They routinely kill livestock.

Bricktop

They are VERY large lizards with VERY large claws. Second only to the massive kimodo dragons.

Whilst they do not attack larger animals (which kimodos do), when threatened they tend to seek the highest point. If you're the highest point, lie down very quickly.

If you try to handle one, as is the case above, you will almost certainly be lacerated. Although it shouldn't be fatal, if it does sever an artery, you might be in trouble, especially if you're way out in the bush.

News to me...although they could take a young lamb quite easily, I suppose.

I just read that. Carrion forms a large part of their diet, but they take sheep and I assume chickens too.

Bricktop

Carrion for sure, but they don't have the means to kill larger animals. Birds are fair game, but it should be remembered that goannas tend not to live in or near heavily populated areas, and prefer drier environments, with the exception of one variant that lives in the northern tropics and is a bit smaller and feeds on small birds and eggs.

Kimodos have toxins in their saliva than can kill livestock. Goannas, although related, have no toxins. Their bites are harmless...other than lots of pain and smaller teethmarks.

Than I guess you can't believe everything on Wiki.

Bricktop

"A goanna will prey on any animal it can catch and is small enough to eat whole. Goannas have been blamed for the death of sheep by farmers, though most likely erroneously, as goannas are also eaters of carrion and are attracted to rotting meat."

I think this is more likely the case, as goannas don't have the weaponry to kill larger animals, nor the speed to catch things like rabbits and small wallabies.

But it eats a LOT of bugs.

And once it eats all the insects in your home, you will know why your cat disappeared.
