Looks like the U.S. won't be getting the regime change they've been stoking.

Why would they bother.

Leave the place alone.

Some of Venezuela's oil is actually owned by China.

They'll have to now.

Actually, no.

Our media are very good at hyping up Russia as an invincible and unsurpassable foe that is beyond Western military power. This is not true.

Russia is nowhere near as military capable as the USA and NATO, and unlike the Cold War, has no immediate allies. If they push too hard, they risk a military response they cannot combat. The US and NATO outgun Russia in the air and at sea. Russia has a massive land force...but it has a massive land mass to defend.

The West is leery of Russia due to its unpredictability and chest thumping, but if push comes to shove, Russia will need to stand down. They will not wish to go nuclear, and they lack the conventional firepower to withstand Western military might.

The US has already reminded Russia that it has some Trump cards (pun intended) when it fired 50 odd Cruise missiles at Assad's chemical weapons cache. Russia mouthed off...but that was all.

Frood

RAND did a war game scenario not too long along and NATO forces repeatedly lost against Russian forces in Europe. Add in the constant military upgrades and in particular hypersonic missiles, and yeah, you're trapped in the thinking of past decades.

Technology wise, the Russian military is far behind America, China and Israel.

NATO may well be outgunned by Russian forces...but the US is hardly going to allow its NATO forces to fall without intervening.

Hypersonic missiles are not superweapons.

">

Russia is very good at announcing new weapons and building prototypes. Manufacturing them to military levels, however, is quite another thing. Remember the PAK50, that was to be their answer to the F22. Cancelled, because they simply couldn't get the bugs out and manufacture the aircraft reliably.

Russia does lead with tanks, which is why they seem to hold the edge in European land warfare. But tanks are not battlefield winners.

If the red button is pushed, I'd back NATO every time.

Frood

The red buttons being pushed would be an instant defeat for all sides but their unused existence prevents any equipped nation from losing by themselves.

So I don't put much stock in unused red buttons. The conventional options are the worries. The US can't be everywhere and they shouldn't be. Russia and China have been playing rapid catch up and in some cases surpassing.

It's not going to end well for the West and when the US retreats from the Asia Pacific, Australia is a sitting duck.

They caint, BT

Same reason they couldn't leave Iraq alone.

Its all about the oil

USA might not be worse than Russia or China, but they're also no better.

Just another superpower trying to gobble up another nation's resources

Like any superpower they'll stop at nothing to get it.

Frood

Oil is a very small concern. The US has always meddled in the politics of South and Central American nations regardless of resources.

They've always feared a unified and powerful Southern neighbour consortium
