There's restricted and non restricted. I only have non restricted which is for rifles.

How can you legally own a gun in Canada if you have a criminal record & served time in prison, Herman ?

It only "might" save lives like you say, but no doubt at a cost to others.  Give everyone a gun and we'll have the same problem as the US.  What should be done is to just claim insurance, and let the police investigate.
