Quote from: "Gaon"Liberman agrees to speed up talks for minority government

Avigdor Liberman of the Israel Beiteinu party has agreed to accelerate negotiations to establish a minority government, one what would rest on the Arab vote, Israel Hayom reports on Sunday.

The Blue and White party confirmed on Saturday night that talks are advancing to establish such a government, Israel Hayom reports.

It is a major about-face for Liberman, who has called the Arab Joint List a "5th column" and has said he won't sit in a government that relies on them.

The Arab List, for its part, has expressed its reluctance to sit with Liberman, whom they've called a racist.

I am really disappointed in Liberman for even considering supporting a coalition with Arab parties.

RIP Israel if this happens.

A twist in Israel's election saga.

Netanyahu Indicted on Corruption Charges, Throwing His Future Into Doubt

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was indicted Thursday on bribery, fraud and breach of trust charges in a set of long-running corruption cases, immediately throwing his political future into doubt and heightening the uncertainty and chaos surrounding Israel's fitful, yearlong struggle to choose its next leader.

Will he have to resign?

Apparently Netanyahu does not need to resign, but it sure weakens his position as Israel looks for a coalition government in order to avoid a third election this year.

Gantz proposes unity gov't rotation if he leads it first

The chief challenger to Israel's embattled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is proposing to lead a unity government with Netanyahu's Likud party.

On Saturday, Blue and White party leader Benny Gantz proposed a unity government for Israel that he would head for two years, with Netanyahu taking over the following two years — if he is acquitted of corruption charges.

Gantz claimed his plan was the "only way to avoid unnecessary elections that no one wants."

It was Gantz's first concrete offer to extract Israel from its political impasse since the country's attorney general announced Thursday Netanyahu would be indicted.

Netanyahu currently heads a caretaker government after two inconclusive elections.

Previous efforts at a power-sharing agreement between the two largest parties failed. Netanyahu has vowed to remain in office.

Gantz thinks he has the upper hand since Bibi was indicted.

Liberman: No option left but another election

Israel Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Liberman said that Israeli citizens will have to head to the polls for a third time in a year as he refuses to enable the formation of a government built on a narrow majority. He blamed the large parties for not coming to an agreement on unity.

According to a Thursday article in Yediot Ahronot, Liberman said that his hints in recent days that he may join a right-wing government were simply a pressure tactic aimed mainly at the Blue and White party to make compromises in negotiations with the Likud.

Saying that he had done everything remotely possible to form a unity government, he laid the responsibility for the failure squarely on the shoulders of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Blue and White head Benny Gantz.

"Unfortunately, both of them made a strategic decision not to go with unity, so the two parties are responsible for another election campaign. On election night, we promised that we'd turn over every stone, that we'd try to exhaust every option and suggest every imaginable initiative. We did this," he said. "We come with clean hands" to the electorate.

Liberman suggested that the reason for the impasse was that each party is "bewitched" by internal polling that shows that they can gain the extra seats they need to form a narrow government if the public goes to the polls once again.

On second thought no, I don't.....it won't change anything.

Israel headed on Wednesday toward a third national election in less than a year.

Neither Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party nor the centrist Blue and White party led by his main rival won enough seats in the Knesset for a governing majority in the previous two contests.

Both men were delegated the task of forming a coalition, but failed.

After giving its preliminary approval, and barring last-minute progress in deadlocked efforts to form a new government, parliament was set to vote for its dissolution later in the day and approve a March 2 election date already agreed by the two major parties.

When I think of Israel, I think of Benjamin Netanyahu.

MK Stav Shaffir, leader of the Green Party, announced that she would be running her party separately in the upcoming parliamentary election, breaking off from the Democratic Union.

The left, already in decline, appears in disarray. Shaffir herself said the situation is "like the Titanic," reported Ynet.

She had previously been a member of the Labor Party but left to instead be a part of the Democratic Union bloc, which is lead by the Meretz party and also includes the Israel Democratic Party, headed by former Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

Polls find Netanyahu edging toward 61-seat blocking majority

Asked who is most fit to be prime minister, 45% said Netanyahu, 36% Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, 13% none of the above and seven percent said they did not know.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is coming closer to obtaining the 61 seats for his right-bloc that he needs to form a right-wing government, polls found on Thursday, four days ahead of Monday's election.

A Direct Polls survey conducted by right-wing pollster Shlomo Filber found that Netanyahu's bloc had 59 seats and his Likud would beat Blue and White 35 seats to 33.

"Two more mandates and we remove Israel from the political quagmire," Netanyahu wrote on Twitter.

Benjamin Netanyahu defeats Gantz, but is still short a majority

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on track to win 59 seats for his bloc of right-wing and religious parties in Monday's election, down by one from the 60 predicted by the initial exit polls. The new prediction leaves him two short of a majority in the Knesset.

Kan News had Likud on 36 seats and Blue and White on 33, with the right bloc holding a total of 59.

The numbers are expected to change overnight. The votes of soldiers, who tend to lean to the right, have not yet been counted and the Joint List tends to go down a seat when the soldiers' votes are added. But, if the Right does not obtain its 61st seat, it could end up being because the far-right Otzma Yehudit refused Netanyahu's repeated requests to quit the race.
