From Zika to bird flu, countries only mobilize to protect themselves from infectious diseases after they arrive.

This article is from September.

World health leaders warn the world is dangerously unprepared for a pandemic

In fact, the world is so woefully unprepared for the potential of a worldwide illness that a group of concerned and prominent political leaders have joined forces to form the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, an independent body working to face down such emergencies. Among those on the board are former Norwegian prime minister and World Health Organization (WHO) director general Gro Harlem Brundtland, Unicef director Henrietta Fore, and International Federation of Red Cross secretary general Elhadj As Sy.

Between 2011 and 2018, the WHO tracked 1,483 epidemic events in 172 countries.

In the face of all this, the global health community is far from ready. "For too long, world leaders' approaches to health emergencies have been characterized by a cycle of panic and neglect," Brundtland said in a statement presenting the report.

@realAzhyaAryola

Is there a country that was super prepared that the rest of the globe should follow in their example?

Quote from: "@realAzhyaAryola"January 11, 2017, Fauci was quoted as saying in a talk he delivered that "No Doubt Trump will face a surprise infectious disease outbreak..."

Yet they, and we, had the benefit of repeated warnings in recent years that another pandemic was, not just a possibility, or even a probability, but inevitable. They, and we, had the trial runs of the SARS epidemic in 2003, and the H1N1 epidemic in 2009, to learn from.

No Western country was prepared for this.

Taiwan reacted quickly to contain it..

But, I don't know about their medicine stockpiles.

cc

Did they contain it by rigid hunkering down and distancing?

No, they didn't actually..

Businesses were still open when I was there.

cc

Which leads to:

Were you there when it existed there in appreciable frequency?

So, how did they contain it? / stop it from spreading?

I'm just trying to get at what did they did differently that resulted in such success? / How did they beat it?

Oh yes, I came back February 12..

There were inconveniences, for example all passengers on flights from outside Taiwan had to remain on planes at Chiang Kai Shek airport while people boarded wearing PPE and taking temperatures..

If one person recorded a high temperature, everyone on the plane would be immediately quarantined..

My temperature was taken everywhere I went..

And again, one would be immediately quarantined if they showed a fever..

Like Singapore and South Korea, Taiwan has a sophisticated system for finding the people those that were infected came in contact with.

cc

So temperature testing and also finding people in contact with person

I'm not out to question that, but I can't see how they could find most everyone the person had been in contact with or near over past few days

Korea never had a total lockdown like we have here in Ontario. Mapping movements of the infected is one of the reasons Korea has been so successful in containing it.

Mapping? By what means?

Was the person to stay in their own space? and if they moved were picked up .. or what??

Not trying to be difficult  .. and for sure it worked .. but I still don't get it

cc, this is an example of how Taiwan uses technology to contain the virus.

As the new coronavirus spreads in South Korea, private software developers have set up websites and apps to help people track cases and shun places where infected people have been in the hope of avoiding the fast-spreading virus.

Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore's approaches means violating people's privacy..

But, I liked when I was in Taiwan you knew the movements of quarantined and infected people.

cc

Did they place transmitters on victims?

Thanks for article .. will read it shortly

Edit - I see .. .tracking victim's phone and showing victim's  location to all others

I had no idea that cell tech could track so closely
