The man who caused a panic about coronavirus that resulted in a Jamaica-bound WestJet flight diverting back to Toronto has posted an apology on YouTube.
James Potok, an aspiring Vaughan rapper who also goes by the stage name Potok Philippe, said in the video uploaded Wednesday he is sorry to "anyone who was affected by my outbursts on the airplane."
WestJet Flight 2702 with 243 passengers on board was a half hour from landing at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay on Monday when Potak, 28, said he took out his phone and started filming a video of himself arriving at the destination.
I reached for an attention-grabbing word that would get the attention of the people around me in the back seats of the plane," he said in the video. "Hunan, China, came to mind and I jokingly said I just visited there, I don't feel well."
The flight attendant asked Potok to follow her to another seat. He said he told her he was kidding and that he had never been to China.
"They told me it was too late, and they had to follow their protocol," he said.
"I was sequestered at the back of the plane and the pilot said, 'There has been a coronavirus hoax and we are now returning to Toronto.' This is when I realized I had triggered a chaotic situation. The joke I had made was that I had visited a Chinese restaurant in Hunan, not Wuhan.
