Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews tests positive for COVID-19

Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews has tested positive for the coronavirus COVID-19, two National Hockey League sources outside Toronto have confirmed to the Toronto Sun.

Matthews, 22, has apparently gone into quarantine at his home in Arizona, hoping to be healthy enough and eligible to travel to Toronto and participate in the opening of Leafs camp on July 10.

He is a young pro athlete. He will be fine.

[Not what we wanted to hear!!!! - On one hand, study is by China and small in numbers - On the other hand it was published in Nature Medicine & results were pretty consistent between individuals]

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-antibody/antibody-levels-in-recovered-covid-19-patients-decline-quickly-research-idUSKBN23T1CJ?utm_source=knewz">Antibody levels in recovered COVID-19 patients decline quickly: research

BEIJING (Reuters) - Levels of an antibody found in recovered COVID-19 patients fell sharply in 2-3 months after infection for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients, according to a Chinese study, raising questions about the length of any immunity against the novel coronavirus.

The research, which studied 37 symptomatic patients and 37 asymptomatic patients, found that of those who tested positive for the presence of the IgG antibody, one of the main types of antibodies induced after infection, over 90% showed sharp declines in 2-3 months

The median percentage decrease was more than 70% for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.

For neutralising serum antibodies, the median percentage of decrease for symptomatic individuals was 11.7%, while for asymptomatic individuals it was 8.3%.

The study was conducted by researchers at Chongqing Medical University, a branch of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and other institutes.

Me 2. My severe "pneumonia" in mid February put me in hospital & just could have been it.

Doc has me at top of her list, just in case.

Still, we have no settled science so far as to how effective  antibodies are .. and for how long.

Immunity does not last forever.

But if it turns out it doesn't last long (deteriorates measurably by the month as small and not conclusive tests indicate), all we will do is keep recycling

Seems little data on repeats and severity experienced  ... maybe a bit early

But, the people that were testing positive after recovering were found to have had faulty tests. That was in South Korea.

cc

Yes. That was an instance of false conclusions.

I'm not speaking of specific situations. I'm trying to get a handle on whether contracting it results in long term effective immunity.

Because if it doesn't, we are just on a never ending roller coaster

The posted China survey, while small,  in every case showed a considerably decrease in immunity strength each month. I hope further studies get very different results

Than would that make a vaccine useless?

That's a good question....how long are vaccinations effective?

https://scitechdaily.com/engineered-nanobodies-derived-from-llama-antibodies-neutralize-covid-19-virus/">Another Approach - Engineered Nanobodies – Derived From Llama Antibodies – Neutralize COVID-19 Virus

Antibodies derived from llamas have been shown to neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus in lab tests, UK researchers announced today.

The team involves researchers from the Rosalind Franklin Institute, Oxford University, Diamond Light Source and Public Health England. They hope the antibodies – known as nanobodies due to their small size – could eventually be developed as a treatment for patients with severe COVID-19. The peer-reviewed findings are published in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology.

Llamas, camels and alpacas naturally produce quantities of small antibodies with a simpler structure, that can be turned into nanobodies. The team engineered their new nanobodies using a collection of antibodies taken from llama blood cells. They have shown that the nanobodies bind tightly to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, blocking it from entering human cells and stopping infection.

Using advanced imaging with X-rays and electrons at Diamond Light Source and Oxford University, the team also identified that the nanobodies bind to the spike protein in a new and different way to other antibodies already discovered.

Professor Ray Owens from Oxford University, who leads the nanobody program at the Franklin, said: "This research is a great example of team work in science, as we have created, analyzed and tested the nanobodies in 12 weeks. This has seen the team carry out experiments in just a few days, which would typically take months to complete. We are hopeful that we can push this breakthrough on into pre-clinical trials."

Professor David Stuart, from Diamond Light Source and Oxford University said: "The electron microscopy structures showed us that the three nanobodies can bind to the virus spike, essentially covering up the portions that the virus uses to enter human cells."

Moderna is closer to a vaccine than this is to reality.

cc

Crucial data from experimental vaccines against the new coronavirus started streaming in as Moderna Inc. disclosed early results and new findings from the University of Oxford's rival shot were reported to be imminent.

Moderna's vaccine elicited antibodies in all people tested in an initial safety trial, federal researchers said Tuesday.

Early results from tests of a vaccine Oxford is developing with AstraZeneca Plc will be published as soon as Thursday, according to a report on the ITV.com website.

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/moderna-fires-up-covid-vaccine-race-with-promising-early-results-1.1465397">https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/moderna-fir ... -1.1465397">https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/moderna-fires-up-covid-vaccine-race-with-promising-early-results-1.1465397

"The good news is that this vaccine induced antibodies," said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "Not just any kind of antibodies, but neutralizing antibodies."

Fauci, in a telephone interview, called the Moderna data "really quite promising." Other experts sounded a note of caution over side effects.

More than half of participants who got the middle of three doses administered in the Moderna trial suffered mild to moderate fatigue, chills, headache and muscle pain. Also, 40 per cent of people in the middle-dose group experienced a fever after the second vaccination. Three of 14 patients given the highest dose experienced severe side effects, but that dose is not being used in larger tests.

'Adverse Events'

"Man, that is a lot of adverse events," said Tony Moody, a doctor and researcher at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute. He said it would be "unusual" for a vaccine to have this rate of side effects.

On the plus side, Moody said that the antibody levels produced were "really encouraging." The neutralizing antibody levels in the trial produced were equivalent to the upper half of what's seen in patients who get infected with the virus and recover, according to the results published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Note: I saw the high levels tested with a few days ago and they were several multiples of normal dosage - so not sure if effects were to bad  for real dosages

We will get a lot more tomorrow "official" it seems
