PRIME CANDIDATES (All started Final Stage Testing) (Moved to top of new page for reference - Will update as statuses  change

Not to break the flow of convo, but at this point I'm trying to keep leading candidates at top for easy reference and additions as new stuff comes in

To get most all aspects of our world back on track, only a vaccine can do that - So vaccines really matter & are now the essence of this thread[/b]

Maybe others will point out anything they see on vaccines so I can keep it current

1. Oxford/AstraZeneca ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (Final Stage Testing Started End of August)

One of the West's leading contenders in the race for a vaccine, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 was among the first to start human trials, in late April. Also known as AZD1222, the vaccine candidate is based on a virus found in chimpanzees. Early results showed that ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 can produce positive immune responses, and late-stage testing began at the end of August, with the backing of the U.S. government – but when one subject developed a potential side effect, it was briefly put on hold.

The Canadian government announced on Sept. 25 that it has secured a deal AstraZeneca for up to 20 million doses of its vaccine candidate.

UPDATE]

2. Moderna mRNA-1273   (Final Stage Testing Started July 27)

One of the first vaccine candidates to be developed, it was shipped to the U.S. government in February and human testing began in March. The company has said that mRNA-1273 is able to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus in a lab setting, and 30,000 volunteers were given the potential vaccine starting July 27 as part of the final phase of human trials.

The Canadian government says it has signed a deal to distribute Moderna's vaccine, if it is approved by Health Canada.

UPDATE]

3. Johnson & Johnson Ad26.COV2-S (Final Stage Testing Started Sept 23)

Johnson & Johnson began human tests of its potential coronavirus vaccine in Belgium and the U.S. in July. A final phase, involving 60,000 volunteers in eight countries, commenced Sept. 23. Modelled after a successful Ebola vaccine, the Johnson & Johnson candidate is unique among the front-runners in that it can be administered in a single dose.

Canada announced Aug. 31 that it has signed a deal with the company to secure a supply of its vaccine candidate, should it be approved by Health Canada.

4. Pfizer vaccine candidate    (Final Stage Testing Started in late July)

One of the biggest names in the global pharmaceutical game, Pfizer is working with German firm BioNTech to develop and test a potential mRNA-based vaccine. Doses were given to human test subjects in Germany in April and in the U.S. in May. Company CEO Albert Bourla said a few weeks later that one vaccine candidate could be ready by October "if things go well, and the stars are aligned." Phase III trials began in late July.

Canada has signed a deal to distribute any Pfizer vaccine approved by Health Canada, and the German government gave the effort a 750-million-euro funding boost in September.

UPDATE]

5. Novavax NVX-CoV2373 (Final Stage Testing Started Sept 25)

Novavax says its potential vaccine uses a protein made with the company's proprietary nanotechnology to stimulate immune responses. On Sept. 25, the company started late-stage trials.

The federal government announced Aug. 31 that it had reached a deal to receive 76 million doses of NVX-CoV2373, provided the American vaccine candidate is approved by Health Canada

Moderna Says It Won't Enforce COVID-19 Vaccine Patents During Pandemic[/url][/b]

Biotech company Moderna, which is conducting a late-stage trial for its experimental COVID-19 candidate, said it would not enforce any patents related to its vaccine for the duration of the pandemic.

The Massachusetts-based company said in an Oct. 8 statement that it "feels a special obligation under the current circumstances to use our resources to bring this pandemic to an end as quickly as possible" and so will not enforce its COVID-19 related patents against vaccine makers using their product to fight the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus outbreak.

Saying it is "proud that its mRNA technology is poised to be used to help end the current pandemic" Moderna also said it would license its vaccine after the outbreak is brought under control.

"Further, to eliminate any perceived IP barriers to vaccine development during the pandemic period, upon request we are also willing to license our intellectual property for COVID-19 vaccines to others for the post pandemic period," the company said.

"We're quite studiously not asserting infringement," Hoge told The Wall Street Journal in an interview. "We're doing the opposite of creating that kind of anxiety for folks. We're not interested in using that IP to decrease the number of vaccines available in a pandemic."

Continued:

Over 100 COVID-19 vaccines are in development around the world, including ones being fast-tracked under the Trump administration's Operation Warp Speed initiative, which has pledged to produce 300 million doses starting in January 2021. It is part of a broader strategy to accelerate the development, manufacturing, and distribution of COVID-19 countermeasures, namely a vaccine, therapeutics, and diagnostics. While it typically takes years to develop a vaccine, the administration has poured billions and cut red tape to compress this process into mere months.

Among the promising vaccine candidates are two from Johnson & Johnson/Janssen Pharmaceuticals and AstraZeneca/University of Oxford, which were developed by modifying adenoviruses, which cause the common cold.

One candidate, from Merck, Sharpe & Dohme/International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, was developed by modifying vesicular stomatitis virus, which primarily infects livestock.

Another two promising vaccine candidates, from Moderna and BioNTech/Fosun Pharma/Pfizer, are messenger RNA vaccines, or mRNA.

"One of the exciting discoveries advanced by Moderna was the combination of mRNA and lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to make vaccines, and the demonstration of this potential in human clinical trials for 11 different infectious disease vaccines since 2015," the company said in a statement.

A 135-page document (pdf) posted on Moderna's website on Sept. 17 provides a detailed description of how the company is conducting its phase 3 trial, the final stage before a potential final launch.

[Moderna's move kind of forces other candidates to do likewise I would think  - altho some may have planned to do so on their own relative to how seriously this pandemic is  affecting life all over the world]

Also, on a side note, In this week's budget, the federal government committed to $1.7 billion in funding over two years towards the University of Oxford/AstraZeneca and University of Queensland/CSL Limited vaccines.

The quest for an effective COVID-19 vaccine is a step closer to reality, with Australian scientists proving potential candidates should work against the now-dominant strain.

CSIRO researchers have dispelled fears mutations of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus, could render some developmental vaccines out of date before they are approved.

Most worldwide vaccines under development are based on the original early-pandemic "D-strain" of COVID, but the virus has since evolved to the globally-dominant "G-strain".

New study published

In a study published on Thursday, researchers found no evidence the new strain would adversely affect the efficacy of vaccine candidates.

This is disappointing.

Johnson & Johnson pauses coronavirus vaccine trials after 'unexplained illness'

Johnson & Johnson has temporarily paused its clinical trials for a potential novel coronavirus vaccine after an "unexplained illness" in a study participant, the company said Monday.

In a statement posted to its website, the company said the person's illness is being reviewed and evaluated by the independent Data Safety Monitoring Board along with the company's own physicians.

The company assured that such "serious adverse events" are not uncommon in clinical trials. It's also not clear if the illness came from the vaccine candidate itself or from a placebo.

"Adverse events — illnesses, accidents, etc. — even those that are serious, are an expected part of any clinical study, especially large studies," the comJohnson & Johnson's Phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trials, which began in late September, are one of the largest in the world so far. The company is testing the shot in 60,000 volunteers in the U.S., South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.

New vaccines or drugs go through multiple stages of trials on humans, looking first to see if they are safe and cause no serious adverse reactions. Each phase adds more people, with usually fewer than a dozen to start, rising to tens of thousands by Phase 3.

Johnson & Johnson has not yet applied for Canadian approval. AstraZeneca was the first company to do so, submitting its application its first scientific results on Oct. 2. Pfizer followed on Friday.

In the last two months, Public Services and Procurement Canada has signed deals with the makers of six COVID-19 vaccines, including AstraZeneca, that will see Canada spend more than $1 billion to get guaranteed access to between 20 million and 76 million doses of each one if they are approved.

The U.S., which has signed off on and championed Johnson & Johnson and other private companies' vaccine efforts, is pushing to have a worthy candidate approved before the end of the year.

I got this information second hand, but a co worker told me she saw on the news that only twenty five million Americans will be vaccinated by this time next year.

"serious adverse events" are not uncommon in clinical trials .. To be expected, addressed and move forward.

One candidate (I forget which) stopped for a few days, then back on track quickly (Phizer?)

Johnson is over 2 months behind the 3 leaders anyhow

Once all doses have been given, a stop once restarted does not mean time lost - The time for the people that have had the shot before did not / cannot  stop running

Don't ever be discouraged by what someone says they read or saw on the news or even if you hear it - In fact, politically, there are many deliberately spreading discouragement + there are people who predicted many years so are still trying save face .. but sorry fella, what is , is .. they have all been

 flying along

We all know that 3 candidates are near the finish line & have many millions of doses already made to immediately swing into distribution mode once they get clearance

2 candidates sent to Canada for examination prior to approval, much less to US  for clearance is GREAT news .. things are progressing at even faster pace than was estimated just months ago
