OTTAWA -- The first COVID-19 vaccine approval from Health Canada could come before Christmas, the agency's chief medical adviser announced on Thursday.

Dr. Supriya Sharma said that the review of Pfizer's vaccine candidate—which is one of three currently being assessed for safety by Health Canada—is the most advanced, and the agency is expecting to approve it for use in Canada along the same pre-Christmas timeline as the American and European health agencies.

Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency have said they are looking at December approvals for the vaccine candidate made in partnership with BioNTech, which was the first out of the gate to report preliminary positive results and an over 90 per cent effectiveness.

On Friday the Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed to MPs that the country is on track to receive an initial six million doses by March, four million from Pfizer and two million from Moderna.

There are already military teams working with the Public Health Agency of Canada on planning for the massive rollout. Fortin most recently served as the Chief of Staff for the Canadian Joint Operations Command.

New projections are it won't be six thousand cases a day. Hard hit areas are in a lock down. But, we may not see a vaccine here until late spring. Meanwhile front line workers and vulnerable demographics in Britain and the US get vaccinated.

Moderna applied for U.S. and European emergency authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine Monday after full results from a late-stage study showed it was 94.1% effective with no serious safety concerns, the company said.

Moderna also reported that its vaccine's efficacy rate was consistent across age, race, ethnicity and gender demographics and had a 100% success rate in preventing severe cases of a disease that has killed nearly 1.5 million people.

The filing sets Moderna's product up to be the second vaccine likely to receive U.S. emergency authorization this year following a shot developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, which had a 95% efficacy rate.

Of the 196 people who contracted COVID-19 out of more than 30,000 volunteers, 185 received a placebo and 11 got the vaccine. Moderna reported 30 severe cases, all in the placebo group, which means the vaccine was 100% effective against severe cases.

The Moderna vaccine is the best one, especially for developing countries.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau created a firestorm when he said Canadians will have to wait a bit to get vaccinated for COVID-19 because the first doses off the production lines will be used in the countries where they are made.

Afeyan was asked whether the fact that Canada committed to pre-purchase its doses before other jurisdictions means it will get its supply first.

Afeyan confirmed that was the case.

"The people who are willing to move early on with even less proof of the efficacy have assured the amount of supply they were willing to sign up to," he said.

"In the case of Canada, that number is about 20 million doses. But the Canadian government, like others, have also reserved the ability to increase that amount. And those discussions are ongoing," he added.

The company  released on Nov. 16 an early analysis of its phase three trial based on just 95 Covid-19 cases that showed its vaccine was at least 94% effective. Monday's data provides a more complete picture of the vaccine's effectiveness.

It also appears to prevent volunteers from getting severely sick from the virus. Of the 30 severe cases of Covid-19 in the trial, none were in the group that received the vaccine, Moderna said. Additionally, there was one Covid-19-related death in the study that occurred in the placebo group, according to the company.

Moderna said the vaccine's effectiveness was consistent across age, race and gender. The 196 confirmed cases included 33 adults over the age of 65 and 42 people from Black, Latino and other diverse communities. The vaccine was also well tolerated with the most common side effects being fatigue, muscle pain, headache and pain at the injection site, the company said.

Trudeau messed up as usual. We will not get inoculated until months after Americans do.

Federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu says Johnson & Johnson has submitted its COVID-19 vaccine candidate for Health Canada's approval.

It's the fourth potential vaccine submitted for assessment in Canada and the first that would require one dose to confer immunity instead of two.

Health Canada has been examining vaccine candidates from Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca since October, when those companies sent partial data on their drugs for what's called a "rolling review."

UK becomes first country to approve Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use

Hospitals in the United Kingdom could be vaccinating their workers against COVID-19 as early as next week as Britain gives Pfizer's shot the green light for emergency use.

The U.K. has become the first country in the world to approve a COVID-19 vaccine backed by rigorous science, which Pfizer and partner BioNTech have said showed 95 per cent efficacy in trials.

Vaccine rollout could begin as early as next week, with frontline workers expected to receive the first doses, partially because of the difficulty in moving and storing the virus outside of healthcare settings.

It's the world's third "approved vaccine," however, few are looking to Russia as both the country's vaccines were approved in the absence of late-stage clinical trials and safety data.

Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a professor of medicine at George Washington University, says approval of Pfizer and BioNTech's vaccine will follow in the U.S., shortly.

EDMONTON -- More than 400,000 seniors and staff in continuing care homes and frontline workers will get the COVID-19 vaccine between January and April, the Alberta government announced Wednesday.

Premier Jason Kenney said Alberta will begin to receive shipments as early as Jan. 4, after Health Canada approve the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, both proven to be approximately 95 per cent effective after trials.

The premier appointed Municipal Affairs Deputy Minister and Lt.-Gen. Paul Wynnyk to lead the province's vaccine taskforce. He already spearheaded the province's PPE roll out at the start of the pandemic.

Phase 1, from January to March, includes 435,000 Albertans — or 10 per cent of the population — in continuing care facility residents and staff, seniors aged 75 and older, First Nations residents 65 and older, and health care workers who may transmit COVID-19 to the most vulnerable.

Phase 2 starts in April and runs through the summer, and although it's undecided who will be in it, the government is aiming to have 30 per cent of the population immunized by the time it ends.

The last phase is scheduled to start in September. Any Albertan can be vaccinated then.

If I understand it right, they are testing mainly  those with symptoms

Bonnie has al lalong been using forces for contact tracing rather than population testing - From the beginning she has seen this as a better use of forces and also more effective

"Testing can help identify people who have COVID-19," Henry said.

Health officials have said asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic people can still spread the virus, even as testing remains "unreliable" for people with mild or non existent symptoms.

Everyone they find with it they spring into action and contact trace & isolate contacts

Testing is unreliable for people with mild sysmptoms? My tests were reliable.

1 case does not an example make & Mild is a relative term

+  as soon as one shows symptoms their contacts are traced even before test results are in

She used the analogy of standing on a street corner testing people vs. using manpower to follow up on contacts to stop further spread ASAP

Even with  for Surrey Central (a disaster & highly Indian & islamic) we still have very few cases in comparison to anyone anywhere

Funny, I've been holding off with Xray (follow up on when I had pneumonia) as I didn't want to go inside our local hospital as many Surrey people know it's better than theirs and so use it bigtime

Finally did it today .. but sure stayed away from clients
