Some people actually do and good for them, but the internet is a creepy place for that.

The internet is the best and worst place for that... Imagine if you will that you have a strong sense of issue or issues but in your small town, you can't meet anyone who even marginally thinks like you do? So you strike up convos with people from afar... then make a connection... what then? will you persevere trying to find an unlikely mate in your town or village, or eventually go full head and tongs for a guy or girl you haven't even physically met before?





Most people don't know how to catfish...

Umm..I don't know where you come from, but I don't live in a village....I live in a large city and I also have indoor plumbing.

It's possible they looked up the person's name on White Pages. However, I think it's a case of giving out too much information to the wrong people.

People give their names out, phone numbers out, and various other geographical info's for various reasons... especially if they have known each other for years or decades...



...I've nearly always done it, but I realize that it comes with undisclosed risks... namely, that somebody gets the wrong idea about something you said or typed, or they themselves overshare with others who have an ax to grind against you... generally, it's pretty safe to do so... sharing... 98.5% of the people on these boards whether they like you, hate you, respect or disrespect you, aren't going to go there.... partly for fear of retaliation, but mostly because it's just a dick move... People are naturally ethical...



Even when we were barbecuing people in the 90's and 2000's for things they released themselves, there was a line in the sand we didn't cross in nearly all cases... (unless they had done it to other people previously)... People who tried to ruin other people's lives didn't last long... and that's the code...

While I agree that most people respect boundaries, even a slight risk of consequences is enough to not post one's place of employment or pictures of their underage children..



There used to be a poster on these forums that owned a contracting business in Perth, Australia and he posted his own full name and that of his business..



A infamous poster wrote something despicable about him on a rate a contractor site in Australia.

Having a closed forum like SG reduces the risk of information falling into the hands of people who take things offline.

I posted a picture in a closed msn forum where 4 people only posted 2004.... The picture got out and has been abused for 16 years.
