Massive Honululu MOLASSES Pipeline Spill Kills 1000s Of Fish

Must be the corrosive nature of molasses. There is an international consensus among scientists that molasses is destroying our planet at an alarming rate. We need to wean ourselves off of this dangerous sweetener and "invest" hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars in new cleaner, greener sweetener technologies. ;)

HONOLULU-Thousands of fish are expected to die in Honolulu waters after a leaky pipe caused 1,400 tons of molasses to ooze into the harbour and kill marine life, state officials said.



Hundreds of fish have been collected so far, the state Department of Health said in a statement Wednesday. Many more fish are expected to die and thousands will likely be collected, it said.



The fish are dying because the high concentration of molasses is making it difficult for them to breathe, said department spokeswoman Janice Okubo. Television footage shows some fish sticking their mouths out of the water.



The department has warned people to stay out of the area because the dead fish could attract sharks and other predators like barracuda.



The brown, sugary substance spilled Monday from a pipe used to load molasses from storage tanks to ships sailing to California. The shipping company, Matson Navigation Co., repaired the hole and the pipe stopped leaking Tuesday morning, spokesman Jeff Hull said.



As much as 233,000 gallons of molasses leaked into the harbour, Matson said. That's equivalent to what would fill about seven rail cars or about one-third of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.



The state was documenting the fish it collected and keeping them on ice for possible testing. Officials were also collecting water samples. The data will allow the department to estimate the duration and severity of the contamination.



Matson ships molasses from Hawaii to the mainland about once a week. Molasses are a made at Hawaii's last sugar plantation, run by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. on Maui.



Matson said in a statement it takes its role an environmental steward very seriously. The company is taking steps ensure spills don't occur in the future, it said.

I didn't know that molasses would ever see a pipe..



I never really thought how molasses was produced and shipped..



I guess a glue spill from a truck or ship into water would cause considerable damage too.

Saw a representation on CBC last night by pouring it into a glass. It is much heavier than water, immediately goes to the bottom and spreads out ... suffocating bottom creatures .... actually once the water cooled it  was a glue.



It did not separate into the water at all so I think it only affects the bottom ... rather stayed to itself as poured and then leveled itself along the bottom. Would kill anything on the bottom and likely capture any bottom feeder fish that tried to bite into it

^^I hear the EU is considering a directive labelling molasses from the US/Hawaii as having a bigger environmental impact than molasses from other countries. How are long are we the people going to tolerate corporate big molasses wrecking the planet for profits. We need a green shift away from molasses to greener sources of sweeteners. I heard the NDP is considering an enviro molasses tax at their convention in Saskatchewan.



I am sorry, but this is an inconvenient truth. ;)

When 233,000 gallons of molasses first spilled into Honolulu Harbor last week, it was hard to imagine the situation getting much worse. The number of dead fish has surpassed 25,000, $3 billion worth of coral reefs have died, sharks have been spotted in the harbor feeding on the dead fish, and Matson, the shipping company that owned and operated the faulty pipeline, is still unable to say when they last inspected the pipe.



But the damage isn't done just yet. Dr. Christian Wayland, State Laboratory Director for the Department of Health State Lab Division, told Hawaii New Now that we could be gearing up for round two of this marine life disaster. "It's possible, " he said, "we can have a large overgrowth of bacteria which is also going to degrade the water quality and drive the dissolved oxygen down again." That means more fish would die.



It's getting worse for fishermen and boaters too. Many of the boats in Honolulu Harbor are equally "dead in the water," according to to trimaran owner Rick Cowden. Cowden and others have been too afraid to start their boats up for fear of ruining their engines. "If molasses or dead fish go through hull, the motors," Cowden told Hawaii News Now, "then we're gonna have problems." Cowden said it would cost around $25,000-$30,000 if his trimaran had to be hauled out of the harbor and repaired for damages.



Matson has agreed to take financial responsibility for the spill, but questions still remain about the lack of oversight or regulation that allowed for a fist-sized hole to form in the pipe.
