Cases have risen sharply in Ontario and Quebec.

Over eleven hundred new cases today in Quebec and almost one thousand in Ontario.

I'm unsure how to reply to that.

I'll try. Yes, they should have known the unwashed would do that to us (fill our hospitals unnecessarily at a ratio of 8-10 to 1) & had tents ready and and a larger parking  area to put them in  .. and many staff siting around waiting for these people for years in event of something like this

Then ... Our actual failing before this was not enough specialists for operations and specialized testing equipment - Frankly that's where our money should have gone ... not to empty beds and extra staff sitting around filing their nails .. waiting for these selfish people to fill the hospitals should there be a pandemic

Sorry for the sarcasm, but I just have no use for what these selfish irresponsible goofballs  are doing to the 90+% all of us who act responsibly .. at least I held back some and didn't state how I REALLY feel about them  ac_smile

Shen Li has mentioned this before..

In my province we spent $25 billion in 2020 on health care not including a multi billion dollar top up to increase ICU capacity..

But, we can only handle about three hundred people in ICU?

The new Covid variant omicron will likely "overwhelm the whole world" in the coming months, according to a Singapore-based infectious disease doctor.

While vaccines against the strain can be developed quickly, they need to be tested over three to six months to prove that they can provide immunity against the variant, Dr. Leong Hoe Nam of Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital said Wednesday.

Omicron COVID-19 variant is three times more likely to cause reinfections, new data show

Let's hope that like other very early reports and estimates, it's like the others in that it's not as bad as very early data indicated

Do you have links for the above?

" reinfections" being those who had been infected becoming infected again?

I hope we are overreacting.

Omicron's discoverer is telling everyone to calm down

The South African discoverer of the Omicron variant is officially telling everyone to calm down . In a column for Britain's The Daily Mail, Angelique Coetzee criticized the global ramp-up of travel bans, mask mandates and quarantine extensions wrought by the new variant. "The simple truth is: we don't know yet anywhere near enough about Omicron to make such judgments or to impose such policies," she wrote, adding that there is still no evidence of anybody being hospitalized due to Omicron. "If, as some evidence suggests, Omicron turns out to be a fast-spreading virus with mostly mild symptoms for the majority of the people who catch it, that would be a useful step on the road to herd immunity," she wrote.

I'll summarize a few links and then post the links themselves below (remember, this is early, so little is known for certain - but it's spike protein indicates easy transmission - but tells nothing of severity

WHO says Omicron in 38 countries, no deaths reported  There have been reports that it is more spreadable but far less severe - Again, it's early, so little is known for certain

(We'll see soon if it is more or less severe).

Reuters - Little data on how hard hitting it is yet. Using Delta as an example, it spread around the world and now accounts for 99% of all cases > hence with it's apparent ability to spread it is expected to take over as the only variant (that's how viruses work 101, the more spreadable ones take over)  - Delta, the strain that is currently accounts for 99% of Covid infections, started becoming more common in the Indian state of Maharashtra in March 2021, and was dominant globally by July, according to Reuters.

The emergence of the new variant was unwelcome, she said, but added that the world was much better prepared given the development of vaccines since the start of the pandemic.

"But right now, Delta is our variant of concern — and the vaccines we are currently administering are effective against serious illness and effective against Delta. Today's recommendations on booster shots are to help improve people's protection against COVID-19."

BOTTOM LINE - Little is know at this point beyond it's physical structure which indicated probability of high transmissibility - As for more, we don't know what we don't know

If most people only get mild symptoms, Omicron could be the beginning of the end of COVID.

Alberta now has four cases of the Omicron variant.

Alberta had 349 cases today and one death..

Ontario reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases for 1st time since late May..

Quebec had 1355 cases today.....the most since April.

It appears that Omicron infections among infants might be cause for concern.

I read that of the over 300 cases that have now been diagnosed in many countries, they have all been very mild or in fact had no symptoms at all.
