CLAIM: Vaccine-related strokes in pilots have caused an "epidemic of plane crashes."



THE FACTS: A video circulating widely on Facebook and various video-sharing websites this week spreads a bogus claim that vaccine-linked medical ailments in pilots have caused numerous recent plane crashes. The nearly 30-minute video uses fake news banners and fearmongering narration to baselessly suggest recent plane accidents, including an Oct. 11 small plane crash in a San Diego suburb, happened because pilots had strokes caused by COVID-19 vaccines.



"There's a silent epidemic of plane crashes happening around the country and nobody's connecting the dots," the video's narrator says. "By listening to the audio from the cockpit of this latest crash, it's clear that the pilot was having a stroke. The pilot was a doctor from a hospital. He was required to get the vaccine."



FAA data shows that fatality rates from general aviation accidents have decreased in 2021. Pilots who want to fly a plane or serve as a required airline crew member after receiving a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine must wait 48 hours before doing so, according to FAA guidelines. That's intended to allow pilots to wait out any side effects from the vaccine, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says are typically mild to moderate and resolve within a few days.



There is no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines increase the risk of stroke, but the coronavirus itself is associated with an increased risk of stroke, according to Dr. Mitchell S.V. Elkind, a professor of neurology and epidemiology at Columbia University and the immediate past president of the American Heart Association.



"About 1-2% of people hospitalized with COVID develop strokes," Elkind told the AP in an email. "So getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent adverse outcomes of COVID, including stroke."

Over half a million fewer surgeries were performed across Canada during the first 16 months of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to previous years, a new report suggests.



The report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) drives home the profound strain the pandemic has had on every province and territory's health-care system, which will continue to be challenged even after COVID-19's impact fades.



About 560,000 fewer surgeries were performed between March 2020 and June 2021 compared to the previous 16-month period through 2019, according to health data compiled and analyzed by CIHI for the report.



Most of that decline occurred during the first wave of the pandemic in March and April 2020, when Johnson says the health-care system -- along with every other sector of the country and the world -- was struggling to figure out how to respond to COVID-19.



"When you look at the rest of the time period, from last summer through to this summer, what you can see is systems adapting to this new information," she said.



"They figured out how to triage, figured out how to turn the tables and how literally to turn things back on. And you can see the different provinces were able to ramp up their surgeries faster or slower, depending on what their system was like."

Alberta recorded 2 new cases of omicron variant on Thursday, bringing total to 19..



There are 333 new COVID cases..



The total number of active cases in Alberta is 4,094..



Alberta Health says there are 368 people with COVID in hospital, including 70 in intensive care..



The province reported no new COVID-related deaths Thursday..

Parents have been warned of an unusual Omicron symptom to look out for in their kids.



Young children appear to be getting rashes while infected with the new variant, a London doctor has reported.



Dr. David Lloyd, a GP from north London, said he has seen about 15 percent of youngsters with confirmed Omicron cases developing spots.



They also suffered with fatigue, headaches and a loss of appetite — which seems to fit with the most common variant symptoms reported so far in adults.



The health expert told Sky News the difference in symptoms was "quite important," along with the rash.



The doctor noted that the suggestion that cases are doubling quickly appeared to be right, from what he is seeing, adding, "So let's hope that it isn't as deadly as the Delta and let's hope that we can get on top of it. But it's a concerning time."



"We've always had a small cohort of patients with COVID who are getting funny rashes, but up to 15 percent of the Omicron children are getting an unusual rash," he said.
