While this is extreme, it does give us a clue as to how spreadable this virus is .. and how many people one person can result in infecting down the chain

It should be prefaced by "BC is very very good and extensive at contact tracing"  .. one thing helping keep our #s lower than most if not all others.

All it took was one British Columbian at a fitness class – unknowingly infected with COVID-19 – to set off an intricate web of transmissions, with 104 others to test positive for the novel coronavirus, three of whom were admitted to hospital.

According to an infographic recently released by Fraser Health, based on actual case data, that single person sparked the spread of the virus to 67 people across two group fitness studios and six school exposures.

A further 37 more people in the region also tested positive for the respiratory disease, linked to further spreading by the gym enthusiasts.

Contact tracing seems to only work when numbers are fairly low.

The idea that Canadians should just shut up and take everything government throws at them is absurd. This is still a free country.

Right now, there is an unprecedented number of rules that nitpick our daily lives. We are being told what to do, where to stand, who to see, what to buy and even how much of it we can buy.

There is no mincing words. This is without a doubt authoritarian.

The question is: to what degree is it justified? There are many people who support all of these restrictions and even ask for more.

Britain is coming out of a hard 4 week long lock down. They managed to lower the number of daily infections by about 1/3. I assume they hoped it would have lowered the number of cases more than that. Lock downs no longer seem to work as well as they did in the spring.

That's true. They are not as effective. Also everything is now indoors. That plays a big roll I believe

Actually it does work at any numbers - IF you have the manpower

We have a very large squad ... They hired 500 last summer, and upped it again this fall

but of course there is a limit vs manpower available .. at a certain point in that ratio, it will break down

All Jason Kenny did was speak directly to the South Asian and Filipino communities. Flipinos and South Asians make up a huge part of the population in NE Calgary. Cultural factors are a part of it.

Some of those factors mentioned include:

a stigma in the community around being sick and telling others.

a deeply embedded culture of hospitality.

meal sharing and inviting guests into the home.

a tradition of large family gatherings and events like weddings and birthdays along with a busy calendar of religious events.

in some cases, language barriers limiting information around best practices when it comes to health measures.

Governments often target messages for certain communities..

I have seen federal, provincial, and municpal messages surrounding COVID in Chinese.

According to premier Kenney, only about one per cent of cases in Alberta can be traced to indoor dining.

I am not a Conservative, but Brian Pallister does not deserve all the blame he is getting for our code red not working as well as they hoped it would. We have a lot of Indians who do not practice social distancing at all.

I doubt it's any one ethnicity that's to blame..

In Europe and North America, lock downs are not working as well as they did in the spring even though death rates have fallen..

After a four week lock down, Britain only managed to lower infections by about one third..

Many American states have been in hard lock downs for more than two weeks with little success lowering infection rates..

Perhaps it's faigue, perhaps it's because the virus has spread too much now, perhaps it's because it's winter, but lock downs are less effective now than last March and April.

Nothead wants an advisory group to report un-filtered recommendations directly to the public? The NDP wants microphones installed within their private meeting chambers as well? "We don't need another costly committee," should be the cry of their band, especially after their critique on the apparent lack of results from Premier ( Jason) Kenney's pricey war room. Sorry, but that concept was part of his election platform. Yes, let's put public access in the renamed war room, too, such that the anti-Alberta oil fanatical groups can be kept in step with plans to re-educate their Kool-Aid drinkers on the changes to the tarsoaked ducks imagery that prevails in their minds?

Jason Kenney said his government needs to do a more effective job of reaching out to "areas of the province where we see disproportionately high spread of COVID-19," which tends to be in communities where people "are living in more poverty, or lower social-economic status with more dense housing."

Kenney said many new Albertans living in those communities face language barriers and that his government would add translators to help communicate public health guidelines. He also said the UCP government would increase supports for symptomatic and infected members of the population, allowing those in dense living situations to self-isolate for free in hotel spaces.

"We need to do, I think, a much better job of reaching out to support families in those challenging circumstances," the premier said.

Balwant Bedi, a pastor at Calgary Punjabi Church, said many in the community are doing their best to social distance, often going months without seeing their relatives in person. He also said he understood Kenney's messaging and agreed it's important to encourage the community to stay safe.

"(Spread of the virus) could happen from everywhere. Gatherings are just one part, but there are so many other parts," Bedi said. "It's not time to blame. Just try to take the good suggestions and each person must do what they can do to stop it."
