A few years back when Zimbabwe went broke, people's much loved pets went missing.

Anyway, I'm hopeful Shenzhen's new law is adhered to.

Do you think that there are still cannibals today? I just wonder.

Absolutely. There are in New Guinea.... children went missing when Haiti was flattened, to cannibalism.... And WHO (or one of those authorities reported North Korea that the poor farmers children were getting eaten.

And there was a Russian serial killer that killed 44 people or more and ate them.

Cannibalism causes (in people) the Mad Cow Disease, so being a cannibal isn't a very smart idea.

Cannibalism doesn't "cause" CJD (or variants).... it can spread it though... just like any disease from not eating properly cooked meat... TB in deer populations... Bubonic in squirrels... corona viruses in bats.... et cetera...

It's not very smart for you to talk about science....

I only regurgitate information from science mags like you do Shorty...

Cannibals do get Mad Cow Disease from eating people, like it or lump it.

And the person around here who needs to stfu is this places drongo... ie YOU.

The practice of cannibalism in one Papua New Guinea tribe lead to the spread of a fatal brain disease called kuru that caused a devastating epidemic in the group. But now, some members of the tribe carry a gene that appears to protect against kuru, as well as other so-called "prion diseases," such as mad cow, a new study finds. <<<< read the rest clinking the link I provided.

Allegations of cannibalism in NK were due to widespread starvation in the 1990's.

I know the farmer peasants were starving... the aid the west sent didn't get to where it was supposed to go...

And is why I am HUGELY against aid. It doesn't get to the people that need it.

Rocket Man's father put the aid in his own pocket.

Even if you send goods to countries, the armies seize it then sell it to the people.

I've been involved with news groups for 16 years and I'm pretty informed on the social issues. If you don't like that I have a long memory on certain issues, that is your tough luck.

Go see the jounalists who made the reports. I happen to believe them.

Shenzhen has become the first city in China to ban eating cats and dogs as part of a wider effort to control the wet markets where the first animal-to-human transmission of the novel coronavirus likely occurred.

"Dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals, and banning the consumption of dogs and cats and other pets is a common practice in developed countries and in Hong Kong and Taiwan," the Shenzhen city government said in an order posted on Wednesday.

Shenzhen, a city of 12.5 million people, is a major technology hub in southern China and sits across the water from semi-autonomous Hong Kong.

China's top legislature said in February that it would ban the trade and consumption of wild animals. However, Shenzhen officials appear to be getting ahead of the game with their own ban, specifically targeting the consumption of cats and dogs.

An estimated 30 million dogs and 10 million cats are killed for their meat across Asia every year, according to Humane Society International (HSI). They're something of a niche food, although Yulin, China, holds a dedicated dog meat festival every year.

I don't think many people in a super prosperous city like Shenzhen eat dogs anyway.

New law in China changed the definition of dogs as "pets" as opposed to the previous definition of "livestock".

I believe they also recently outlawed the "farming" of wild animals as well.

Somebody posted about that this morning. That is good. I mean if it's enforced.

I hope so too.  I was watching a Frontline special on the Uyghurs in Xinjiang, apparently, they're the most monitored/surveilled  people on the planet.  I think they're just test subjects for what Xi Jinping wants to do with all of China.   So maybe they will... ac_dunno

It might be in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and a few others. In the hinterlands, fuggedaboutit.
