Major William Simpson Dunlop, 12th South Carolina Infantry, writing of the Confederate soldier --

"They fought for principle and not for pay -- for home rule, local self government, constitutional liberty—against aggression, paternalism and Federal domination. And while their cause went down under the "arbitrament of the sword," no court of justice or equity has ever adjudicated against their claims. They were grand soldiers, and they were right."

That's typical talk from a losing side.

But Thiel, they fought for the same their forefathers did, less than 100 years prior. Thats why a lot of Southern soldiers wore Revolutionary War period clothing that their kin had wore.

Heck, George Washington is in the seal.....

I get what he's saying. Defeated army brass usually say the same thing. I don't think he is picking on Confederate officers in particular.

I get it too, I just wanted to add my thoughts in the spirit of history month lol.

There lots of interesting tidbits in this thread.
gay, conservative and proud

The first nonmythical, historical woman to appear on any paper currency within our current borders was not on a U.S. bill but rather on Confederate money: "Queen of the Confederacy" Lucy Holcombe Pickens (and South Carolina's first lady) was portrayed on Confederate $1 bills of 1862 and 1863 and the $100 bill of 1862 through 1864.

In other words, contrary to news reports, Lucy Pickens was actually the first woman to be depicted on paper money issued in America, and not Pocahontas Harriet Tubman or Martha Washington.

"We feel that our cause is just and holy; we protest solemnly in the face of mankind that we desire peace at any sacrifice save that of honour and independence; we ask no conquest, no aggrandizement, no concession of any kind from the States with which we were lately confederated; all we ask is to be let alone; that those who never held power over us shall not now attempt our subjugation by arms." -- Jefferson Davis - April 29, 1861
