If it happened in the USA, I'm sure he would be blamed..

American politics is a three ring circus.

My Nova Scotia friend is thoroughly traumatized by this event.

^^^ Not surprised .. that's justified

We have discussed lack of alerts by NS govt etc.

Nova Scotia premier says province had technicians on hand to send an alert — but the Mounties never asked

(They did put it on police's twitter - How many are logged into that? )

Both RCMP and NS govt were exceedingly derelict in informing no one  .. and the province does have an alert process that was not used

I acknowledge the pace + small number of police would be overwhelming to management - but notifying people should have been done

In contrast, US embassy did sent 2 separate alerts .. 1 via email and other via text as I read it to their people registered as staying in NS >  "dangerous activity in process, stay in, lock doors etc."

WTF??

As for investigation of the 16 sites, this small province of course is overwhelmed and   bringing in teams from across Canada

Our alerts in Alberta are very good.

I saw a chilling interview with a man who was being hunted by the killer. He managed to hide in the woods until daylight.

^^ Did they know each other? or was he in the wrong place

Video appears to show Nova Scotia shooting suspect stop, change clothes amid killing

Looks legit - A real cop would not do that .. "Cool" / cold or what?

The person who posted the video said it was taken from a surveillance camera outside their father's business in Millbrook First Nation, just eight kilometres north of Brookfield.

"I am so disgusted and disturbed at how calm this man is," the original Facebook post read.

"My heart is with you, Nova Scotia."

Nova Scotia shootings began after gunman attacked his girlfriend, sources say

The killings started with what investigators believe was an argument between Gabriel Wortman and his girlfriend, sources tell Global News.

The killings that began Saturday night in the rural Nova Scotia community of Portapique and ended the next morning with the death of the gunman at a gas station started with domestic violence when Gabriel Wortman attacked his girlfriend, sources tell Global News.

Investigators believe Wortman and his girlfriend were at a party at a nearby home in the Portapique area when Wortman began arguing with her. They left the party and sources believe Wortman escalated the argument back at his cottage — assaulting her and tying her up. She escaped and hid in the woods.

Wortman left his cottage after the assault and investigators believe that's when the shootings started. He returned to the house where the party was being held and killed several people there, sources said.

Police found Wortman's girlfriend around 7 a.m. local, sources said. It was from her they learned he was likely dressed as a police officer and driving a fake cruiser. She also provided the picture of the vehicle that was widely distributed. The information changed the way police were searching for Wortman.

Police have not yet commented on a possible motive, nor have they said whether the killing was planned.

I'm surprised he didn't kill his girlfriend.

QuoteI'm surprised he didn't kill his girlfriend.

I believe she got ropes undone, fled and hid ... although if you mean right then and there instead of tying her, a good question.

He did burn his house down so maybe he intended to burn her to death like he did to 9 others .. but didn't realize she got away??

Not totally sure. There's a new summary article out today .. I'll see if they address that

TODAY INFO:

Wortman had 4 semi-automatic weapons .. two semi-automatic handguns and two semi-automatic rifles

Police have confirmed that nine of the victims died in house fires and 13 were shot.

They now believe Wortman used "an accelerant" to set the fires .. From witness statements, we know the gunman had a significant supply of gasoline at his home

Apparently Gabriel Wortman was a violent alcoholic who beat his girlfriend. Police investigated his violent attacks and were warned he had illegal firearms.
