I never bought that idea the death penalty wasn't a deterrent.

The death penalty isn't a deterrent because the types of criminals that end up on death row don't give a shit about what the punishment is.  They'll dismember bodies whatever the punishment may be...  It's what they do.  They don't think like normal people.

Life in a maximum security prison should be enough of a sdeterrent.

It should be, but it isn't.  That's why serial killers do what they do.  No punishment will alter their actions.  And that's why it's better to execute them, since it's cheaper than housing them for decades.

Around here you'll get smacked with a hockey stick if you're found with anything other than the superior Hawkins Cheezies!  They actually are far superior to those soft cheese puffs...  Not sure if they're sold outside of Canada.

At least the red skidmark is gone now. A welcome improvement. Now the site just looks like a generic tin of legumes.
