CBC requests another bailout with ad sales down again

Just 578,000 Canadians watched a live CBC broadcast of Emperor Naruhito open the Summer Games according to Numeris, formerly the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement. By comparison 975,000 watched a regularly scheduled episode of a Master Chef cooking contest on CTV.

Blacklock's Reporter says CBC advertising revenues fell again last year by 18% and the state broadcaster said it will require more federal grants to offset commercial losses.

Suspended Snopes co-founder plagiarized 54 articles for liberal fact-checking website



The liberal fact-checking website Snopes was forced to retract dozens of articles after the co-founder was caught in a plagiarism scandal. BuzzFeed News exposed the co-founder for plagiarizing 54 articles between 2015-2019.



BuzzFeed News alleged they had obtained emails and Slack messages that incriminated the Snopes co-founder.



In one Slack message from January 2016, Mikkelson detailed his strategy for copying and then quickly rewriting articles after publishing. "Usually when a hot real news story breaks (such as a celebrity death), I just find a wire service or other news story about it and publish it on the site verbatim to quickly get a page up. Once that's done, then I quickly start editing the page to reword it and add material from other sources to make it not plagiarized," he wrote.

CNN faced some fierce backlash online after running a misleading report about the coronavirus deaths among teachers in Florida.



Critics online immediately noted that the "absurd framing" of the story at CNN implied that the teachers had contracted the coronavirus at schools, but they had not.



"This is an absurd framing," replied former CNN producer Steve Krakauer. "Broward county schools are not open until next week. You could say this about any occupation. It has absolutely nothing to do with them being 'teachers' or about what schools should do regarding masks, vaccines or anything else."

Snopes, a fact-checking website, has retracted at least 54 articles after finding its co-founder and CEO repeatedly plagiarized content from other websites.



David Mikkelson, the Snopes co-founder, has been suspended as the website completes an internal review of the issue.

Washington Post Article Published With 'Reckless Disregard of the Truth:' Judge

The Washington Post published an article last year with a "reckless disregard of the truth," a federal judge said this week.



The article primarily dealt with the selection of Michael Ellis to be general counsel of the National Security Agency, but included portions about Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.). Ellis is a former chief of staff for Nunes.



The article, penned by Ellen Nakashima of the Post, stated that Nunes in March 2019 "was given access at the White House to intelligence files that Nunes believed would buttress Trump's baseless claims of the Obama administration spying on Trump Tower."



Nunes sued the paper, alleging Nakashima and the Post defamed him, and didn't properly update the defamatory statements in a correction.



Nunes said he never believed that the Obama administration spied on Trump Tower, which is in New York.



"Nakashima made up facts out of whole cloth, including that Plaintiff 'believed' that 'intelligence files' at the White House would 'buttress his baseless claims of the Obama administration spying on Trump Tower.' Nakashima did not have one shred of evidence to support her statement about Plaintiff's 'belief' because, in truth, she completely fabricated the accusation," his lawsuit states.
