Americans’ Distrust of Media Reaches New High, Gallup Says

Americans' distrust of mass media has reached a record high, with 33 percent of those polled by Gallup saying they had no confidence at all in the media. At the same time, Democrats have reported increasing levels of trust in the media.

Republican confidence in the media has plummeted while Democratic Party supporters' trust in the media has risen dramatically, the pollster reports. Democrats' trust over the preceding four years has been among the highest Gallup has measured for any party in the past two decades.

The partisan divide over the reliability of the media swelled to a record 63 points as a mere 10 percent of Republicans surveyed in Gallup's annual Governance poll said they had a "great deal" or "fair amount" of trust in the media, compared to 73 percent of Democrats who answered the same way.

The massive gap between supporters of the two parties is the largest the 86-year-old, Washington, D.C.-based Gallup organization has recorded since it started asking respondents the question in the 1970s.

Republicans' trust in the media has fallen since the then-lowest reading on record—32 percent was reported in 2016. Republican trust levels have fallen off since the George W. Bush and Barack Obama presidencies, when on average Republicans polled 30 to 35 percent confidence in the media.

"Americans' confidence in the media to report the news fairly, accurately and fully has been persistently low for over a decade and shows no signs of improving, as Republicans' and Democrats' trust moves in opposite directions," Gallup said in a statement.

"The political polarization that grips the country is reflected in partisans' views of the media, which are now the most divergent in Gallup's history."

Four in 10 U.S. adults responded they had "a great deal" (9 percent) or "a fair amount" (31 percent) of trust and confidence in the media to report the news "fully, accurately, and fairly," while six in 10 said they had "not very much" trust (27 percent) or "none at all" (33 percent).

Gallup first asked respondents about their trust in mass media in 1972 and has continued to asking the question almost every year since 1997. Trust ranged between 68 percent and 72 percent in the 1970s, and though it had dipped by the late 1990s, it remained in majority territory until 2004, after which it slid to 44 percent. After hitting 50 percent in 2005, it has not gone above 47 percent.

Americans' overall trust in the media has leveled off since last year. The 33 percent who indicated they do not have any confidence reflects a five-point uptick and is the highest reading on record.

"Republicans are the main drivers behind this change: 58% of them now express this view, marking a 10-point increase and the first-ever majority-level reading. Although Democrats' overall level of trust has not changed, the 57% who now say they have a fair amount of trust represents a 12-point jump from 2019, mostly attributable to a decrease in the percentage saying they trust the media a great deal," Gallup stated.

A separate recent Gallup poll found that more than eight in 10 Americans say the media bears "a great deal" (47 percent) or "a moderate amount" (36 percent) of blame for political division in the United States. Nearly as many say the media could do "a great deal" (49 percent) or "a moderate amount" (34 percent) to heal those divisions.

"Americans are largely overwhelmed by the sheer volume and speed of news coverage, and 74% say the spread of misinformation online is 'a major problem,' exceeding all other challenges posed by the media environment," Gallup said.

"Seven in 10 U.S. adults would like to see major internet companies find ways to exclude false information or hateful expression online."

'No Crime There, Period': Alan Dershowitz Says Trump Phone Call Taken out of Context

News outlets took President Donald Trump's comments to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger out of context during a phone call that was later leaked to the press, said Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz.

"Well, every major media is taking it out of context," Dershowitz told Just The News, adding that there was no apparent crime being committed on the phone call by the president.

Mainstream outlets initially reported on Trump's remarks to Raffensberger as an attempt at a shakedown to "find 11,780 votes" in Georgia for the Nov. 3 presidential contest.

But the full transcript of the call showed that Trump asserted that he won the state and asked the election official to probe election irregularities—like he has been doing for weeks.

"He's not saying I want you to create the vote," said Dershowitz in the interview. "He's not saying I want you to manufacture or concoct the votes. He's saying, and he's been saying this for months, on Twitter and his statements and his campaign's, he thinks that people voted for him and those votes weren't counted. He's entitled as a citizen, as a candidate, to say, 'I want you to find those votes, I want you to find the votes that will pass for me and what weren't counted, I want you to find votes that were cast against me that shouldn't have been counted—by people who are dead people, who are out of state."

Intolerant woke capitalists and billionaires own North American English language media. That is so dangerous.
