I've heard All in the Family was controversial.

I would not call the show itself as "controversial" per se.



"Controversy" took place ON the show only, NOT within society and press etc. as the in many ways "regular guy Archie"  was used as a punching bag by the then silly prissy "woke" and very unlikeable son in law  who I guess invented "Cancel" as a means to dun the old fellow on every morality issue under the sun (exactly as is happening today but out in the open now so that every possible item can be used for political gain)



Color was only one of many  issues, but on that issue and as time went on the father in law (Archie Bunker) finally allowed the  black neighbour to visit his house and over time "kinda /  sorta" got to like the guy .. albeit reluctantly as poor Archie  could not understand why.



Each person on the show was a different major stereotype who together covered (and demonstrated) all of society - and the constant mature humor shows up  any so-called comedy  today for the low level childish entity  it has become



The always apparent irony (and crux of this "morality"play) was that this "bad guy Archie" had worked hard all his life never hurting a single soul and retired with the means to support not only himself & his wife, but also his pain in the ass  daughter and lazy ass leach son in law .. who instead of appreciating it (or getting a job) ..  instead spent his full time pointing out his benefactor's flaws (again, exactly what we are seeing play out in the open today and as a tool not to make society better, rather for political gain

[Banks have long been major cancelers - Of course it's not right (in fact it's left   ) but every "cancel" is OK with progs & the tactic keeps growing rapidly in all areas - to the point were anything but Big Brother-speak is cancelled]
