In high school, before canine units were formalized (at least in our smaller city,  a schoolmate friend and her family cared for a martial trained monstrous Shepherd as the family dog .. The cops would come and get the dog when they needed it.



It' cop handler put  on an in-combat  demo in the high school yard ... What a sight to see  .. truly amazing  .



After the show the girl / owner walked it around off leash for us students to pat and play with

For a time, my father oversaw the K9 unit on the force he was attached to... Growing up we fostered two retired K9 unit dogs...A female Doberman named Sally and a male German Shepard named Bucky. They were amazing animals and I have the utmost respect for them and the job they are trained to do. Working with those dogs I learned how to train dogs for agility trials and learn how to train dogs with just hand commands. Both were extremely trustworthy around most people but that could change at the drop of a hat with a single verbal command or hand signal. Consequently we never had to lock our doors or worry about uninvited house guests...



In fact one of the dogs, Sally may have saved my life once. But that is a story for another time as it is extremely bizarre and I don't speak of it openly because upon hearing it, most people assume I fell out of my tree...
