B.C. teachers vote in favour of strike

By Tracy Sherlock, Vancouver Sun March 6, 2014

B.C. teachers voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike late Thursday, said Jim Iker, president of the B.C. Teachers' Federation, with 89 per cent of those who voted in agreement.

Neither the government nor the teachers have released full details of their contract proposals, and negotiations will continue through next week. During spring break, the federation holds its annual general meeting in Vancouver and bargaining will likely be suspended.

How much do teachers earn?

The BCTF says the 2012-13 average teacher salary in B.C. was $71,485. Last week, the figure $80,582 was reported, but this is an average of "educator" salaries, which includes teachers and more highly paid administrators. In preparing affidavits to estimate what it would cost to restore 2002 contract language on staffing and class composition, the salary used was approximately $90,000.

The starting salary for a teacher with a bachelor of education degree is $48,083 in Vancouver, according to a chart prepared by the BCTF. The top salary level, reached after 10 years of work, for a teacher with a masters of education is $81,488 in Vancouver.

Very wise considering the public school system on that continent.

I know this issue well.

So Munday, insults aside, what is your exact issue with BC Teachers?

ok insults aside......same issue as with teachers everywhere.....collectively they are greedy, selfish, lazy and a product of a canadian university degree....in other words they are a bunch of enviro brainwashed, socialist, workers paradise, progressive, white man hating, assholes....the most insulting component of their MO is these pieces of shit continually use your/our children as hostages for their bargaining purposes ......

what other issues do you see that apply

class size, money, hours of work, mainstreaming....all red herring issues resulting from the above...teachers are more than well paid and hired to teach in accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Education...if they cannot do that then quit and work for 1/10 of their salary somewhere else..otherwise STFU and do their job and hope that the public doesn't wake up and realize what a disgrace our educational system has become......

I didn't even read the article OL. I've seen it time and time again in other provinces. Money, union power, influence and like you said, social engineering. They crack the whip, governments cave and we pay the tab. Same old, same old.

Odinson

We dont have the private-school option.

The place where I was sent was just where they concentrated all the troublemakers.

Odinson

The teachers get crappy pay but then again their job isnt that hard.

Ah, so the typical uninformed issues.  Gotcha.

Our public education system, despite chronic underfunding, remains one of the best in the world.  In terms of literacy, according to the CIA Factbook we come in at 100% of kids being able to read or write by age 6.  That's the best in the world.  In terms of quality of education, the UN Human Development Index ranked Canada 6th in the world at last census.  So thank you greedy, lazy pieces of shit teachers for making us look so good on an international stage.  Job well done!

So now let's talk salary.  Starting salary of a teacher is about $43,000 a year.  So 5 years of university education gets them $43K.  I've done reception jobs requiring no more than a high school diploma that have paid more in a year than that.  Top your degree up to a Master's and you top out at $85K or so.  To put that into perspective, my husband who lacks a relevant degree in his field (self taught) makes significantly more than that in a year in the private sector.  The common saying by teachers and those who know what they do in a day is that no one goes into teaching for the money and I'm very inclined to believe it.  I have two kids in the public school system and I find them hard enough to manage nevermind a classroom with 30 of them.  When I say 30 of them, that is my children's actual class size.  It is common to see intermediate (grades 4-7) classrooms with 25-30 students, especially since the Liberal government changed class size limits and composition.

So what's class composition?  Class composition is how many students with special needs or individual education plans can be assigned to one teacher.  The Liberal government removed restrictions on how many students with special education needs can be in a classroom so now teachers are dealing with more students with additional requirements (learning disabilities, behavioral issues, etc).  Our teachers hit the picket lines over class size and composition during last negotiations as well as challenged the government in court to give them back the right to bargain class size/composition.  The government lost the law suit and was absolutely spanked by the presiding judge for bargaining in BAD faith.  (I should note that hasn't actually changed anything.  The government still won't change things and have decided to appeal the decision.  I'm going to bet money they are going to lose on appeal as well, thus flushing thousands upon thousands of our tax dollars down the toilet for nothing but hey - it's still cheaper than paying for extra teachers and having balanced and non-bloated classrooms, right?  There's no lawyers union to bitch about after all.

Why you think people who see systematic faults within a education should STFU and find a different job if they don't like it (I know a few who have BTW) is beyond me.

And honestly, having been privy to more than one education budgeting session, this teacher slagging is the red herring for chronic underfunding of public education.  The fact that we still rank as well as we do given the cuts education has seen is truly a testament to the quality of our educators.

I don't know about BC, but our spending on teachers has risen. Actually, since the first two terms of Klein spending on our entire snivel service has gone in one direction.....STRAIGHT UP!!!

RW

Oh honey, they want you to think that.  They have increased certain targeted funding or put more money into increases to insurance costs, etc.  Not into classrooms.

what i am slagging is the system and the players in the system...the educational system as with all other progressive systems in this country today is badly broken...it cannot be fixed piece meal..it needs a complete overhaul and transformation...as long as we have powerful unions protecting their interests over the public good this will not happen.....as a country we will continue to slide into third world status until it is irreversible..in my opinion we have passed the point where that transformation can come within our current political structure......

the main problem you and i have regarding this issue  is our different life experiences.....i am not really that old, but i grew up in the pre-progressive, pre-charter days when this country was actually considered "free" and ruled with a modicum of common sense....those days are long past

the reason we have classrooms full of unruly, handicapped, mentally challenged non-english speaking children is directly connected to the teachers unions...they were the proponents of this all inclusive classroom concept.....to increase the number of teachers required and thus union dues...now they complain because teachers can't handle this various mix of kids who can't learn with the mainstream of society..well we parents all told them that way back when...but to no avail..it was the progressive way to provide education...now they are reaping what they sowed and complaining once again that they need more teachers and more money...once again i call bullshit..

when i went to school in the entire high school (some 450 kids) there were (0) zero incidences of ADHD, ADD, etc. etc.......why was that....environment, food, parenting, expectations, common sense....all of the above.... if a kid was  acting up it was common for the teacher (male) to hit the kid on the side of the head with the biggest text book he could get ahold of...usually knocking him right out of his desk.......that was the end of it....when that teacher came into the room everyone snapped to attention and fucking well payed attention while he was teaching....no grief counselors..no psychologists...no parental calls...end of problem.....teachers taught to a achieve a level of excellence..if you had trouble keeping up you fucking worked and studied harder or you FAILED..that was you and your parents responsibility..the teacher was there to teach the curriculum..not to wipe someones nose.....anyway we will never agree on this issue...i am eternally thankful my kids completed their education before the current system was fully implemented.......
