I don't get the whole troll thing and never did. I post to discuss the issues of the day, and debate others. I don't get the point of insulting strangers.

That is not to say I don't enjoy humour. But, flaming seems incompatible with anonymous message boards.

Yep. Its all a bunch of oldies. Until you, i was the youngest member of the troll community.

 I think i was around 27 or so when i joined. Im 45 now so if that isnt a testimony to how fucking dorky we all are, i dont know what is.

 Ill say it gets sad and scary when all the ones who were "seniors" when i was new to the boards have all since died.

 For like 18 years Obi was the first person to wish me a happy birthday. He beat out my own kids in wishing me a happy birthday first lol.

 Peaches is gone. El Phuppy. Toknee Montana. Lemon. Then members who just simply dont post but i still know on socail media...so i can watch them age.

 But yes, the troll community is quite geriatric lol.

Most of the trolls who went over to the flames boards were doing it just to get the flamers crashing out and it was SO easy.


 Most of the flamers were heavily reliant on whatever status they imagined they had. That self image they tried crafting was like a bleeding open wound that trolls loved exploiting.

in my mind the chasm between trolls and flamers can be illustrated with the following scene taken from tombstone. Flamers, being so very undisciplined and lacking self control rely on some failed sense of one upmanship to satisfy a sense of self worth

whereas trolls are merely content with sowing discord and watching the entertainment that ensues

Flamers will more often than not, tend to get all butthurt when they lose in some public setting and seek to eliminate their opponent through PI disclosure, panel abuse etc.

all counterproductive and corrosive elements to any thriving message board -- see butthurt factory for details

Again, trolls don't behave this way. At least the good ones don't. Trolls realize that their playgrounds are far more enjoyable when there is a large field of targets with varying emotional physiologies, beliefs, hangups etc etc and will seek to do just enough to get the reactions they are looking for

We don't care about silly things like winning flame contests (even when we have the ability to do so) nor public praise -- we thrive on reaction.

That's the stuff that *killed* flaming then adding insult to injury those tactics became part of how people saw flaming and flamers from that point onward. It's both unfair and undeserved; it used to be infuriating but I long ago gave up trying to argue the point except on rare occasions like this.

But yeah, the "flaming" that rose to prominence when the folk who just wanted to have fun walked away in disgust was/is petty, unimaginative, puerile, and disgraceful.

No doubt about that.

It's why I now go by 'Garraty' instead of 'Vitriol'. I don't want anyone to mistake me for one of the relatively newer crop of "flamers", a pox be upon all their houses.

indeed. The idea of organized matches and flaming just for the sake of competition isn't sustainable and inevitably leads to the type of mangled gibberish Poofer was famous for. Although certain flamers such as Oranje, Summy and Iron Duke maintained a cut above they were too few and far between.

Mostly the arena was littered spamming jagoffs like amazingstink and boredom mongers like AlphaNova

AlphaNova -- now that was a guy who could make you really contemplate suicide before reaching the end of the first paragraph on one his insomnia crushing tirades

Anyway, I much prefer the banter that is birth out of circumstance as opposed to doing some dick dance about judges, stupid and meaningless stips etc etc

Making Obi lose his shit during those matches was always fun though.  I said NO RUNINS

if your idea of flaming is obnoxious cruelty, invasions of privacy and long winded tirades which did a better job of demonstrating personal rage than it did to outwit an opponent -- then yeah, he was a good flamer.

I thought he was dog shit. His posts were like the winds to the sails of my mouse wheel. It's the same opinion I have of have of Flynn's prowess. Boring, angry and malevolent

Oranje on the other-hand. Funny, witty, excellent wordsmith, a balance between arrogance and intelligence and a knack for establishing a theme against his opponent. Very enjoyable reads.

Even Poofer with his 2nd grade writing skills could be hysterical on many occasions

Sadly though -- in the infancy years people who could not properly distinguish between the avatar and human being sitting behind the computer dominated the field and destroyed the game for the rest of us.
