I keep expecting to see that I've been unmasked but nary yet a peep.

It could be I've been overestimating their sleuthing skillz and need to make a "mistake" or two before they catch on.

lulz
I guess you have to have posted with those geriatric flamers across multiple forums for at least a quarter century to appreciate that repeating the same insults to the same people for the bazillionth time really is content.

It might help if you look at those interactions as a form of rote exchanges, like people people saying "Good morning" or "How are you doing?" to each other when they meet. It's not supposed to be literally an observation or inquiry into their current status. They're just default noises people make at each other in a shared expression of familiarity and social connectedness.

All they're really saying is:
"I recognize you as a member of my tribe and therefore offer you acknowledgement of existence."

No thinking needed.
Pure reflex call-and-respond display, not dissimilar to apes pant-hooting to each other across the tree tops.

Content? No.
Smooth monkey brains doing smooth monkey brain things.

Expecting deeper meaning or higher-order engagement are fool's errands.

I've seen flamers try to explain the appeal of flaming. But even when it had a following besides the dozen elderly shut ins who remain today it would never have appealed to me. But, to each their own.

At this point it seems to be one of those "you had to be there" kinda things.

Too much time, lexicon drift, cultural appropriation, and simple fuckery has happened in the interim. Trying to explain or paint an accurate picture of what Flaming used to be is more trouble than it's worth, frankly.

Flynn gets visited by the ghosts of flaming past whenever he closes his eyes.

I believe it's appeal was limited to a tiny minority of the online population. People who say otherwise are looking in the rearview mirror with rose coloured glasses on.

1998-2005 is Yahoo was the most awesomness inferwebs of all times! flaming, trolling, and hysterical internet breakdowns all originated from that place. Baby shit soft people of today couldnt handle it. Hell, many who lived it couldnt handle it.

Then that cunt Neil Buddie came along and fucked it all to hell!

If so, what a silly person that is.
My advice would be to not believe a word coming out of their wee befuddled heads on any subject at all.

Usenet was the best incubator for lulz and remained the top place for them until forums and other social media siphoned off much of the audiences. Also: the time I spent on WebTV/MSNTV was and still is the highlight of my interwurb performance art experiences.

We scoffed at MSN, Yahoo, TalkCity, etc. as latecomers and far inferior versions of the craft.

Usenet was the pro league... all others were merely farm clubs.

Heard of it, never used it. Yahoo attracted everyday average people, a LOT of em too. That made it deliciously ripe for generating hysteria. Sure, there may have been other places, but nothing like Yahoo.

Yes. The late caskur did.

There were a few other people, but caskur is the one handle that I recall just off of the tip of my memory.

She was in my top-ten list of favorite frenemies, bless her heart, but...

...she talked a lot of bullshit. LoL

Even among people who used Flaming in its original context, not the bastardized monstrosity that later became "popular", it was recognized that so-called Flamers were a tiny subset of internet users as a whole. Exaggerating things like that was a hallmark of the folk who appropriated the term 'flamers' though, so it tracks.
