Even among people who used Flaming in its original context, not the bastardized monstrosity that later became "popular", it was recognized that so-called Flamers were a tiny subset of internet users as a whole. Exaggerating things like that was a hallmark of the folk who appropriated the term 'flamers' though, so it tracks.
I liked old caskur. She was good people.

Quote from: Garraty_47 on May 07, 2026, 08:06:47 AMIt might help if you look at those interactions as a form of rote exchanges, like people people saying "Good morning" or "How are you doing?" to each other when they meet. It's not supposed to be literally an observation or inquiry into their current status. They're just default noises people make at each other in a shared expression of familiarity and social connectedness.

All they're really saying is:
"I recognize you as a member of my tribe and therefore offer you acknowledgement of existence."

No thinking needed.
Pure reflex call-and-respond display, not dissimilar to apes pant-hooting to each other across the tree tops.

Content? No.
Smooth monkey brains doing smooth monkey brain things.

Expecting deeper meaning or higher-order engagement are fool's errands.
It might help if flamers have nothing going on in their lives. What am I saying, it's a necessity.

Quote from: Lokmar on May 07, 2026, 02:42:52 PMHeard of it, never used it. Yahoo attracted everyday average people, a LOT of em too. That made it deliciously ripe for generating hysteria. Sure, there may have been other places, but nothing like Yahoo.

Yep, that was what made yahoo great.  In the early 2000s it was the biggest site in the world and all of us were just a click away.  It was like being one of those 19th century dudes shooting buffalo from the train windows as they rolled across the plains.

I knew she exaggerated how entertaining flaming was. She even went as far as to say just five years ago it was still great.

Five years ago flaming hadn't actually been a thing for more than a decade.  :dontknow:

At one time flaming *was* entertaining but that was long ago in a galaxy far, far away.
