Few people have the day off.  Most businesses are open.

Most businesses were open on Canada Day too. But, employes working were paid time and a half plus eight hours regular stat time. And working that day was voluntary, not mandatory.

Not here.  Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Averageamericanwageslave get no such perks.  The only person I've known who did had a government contract.  When I worked for the local community college they just closed for the day and if you wanted to get paid you took a vacation day.  :/

When I worked for an oilfield services contractor in Pnnsylavania, I got paid for official holidays that I didn't work. The oil and gas sector is pretty generous.

I noticed that too, in years past the fireworks around here would go non-stop for a good four hours, this year was far smaller.
