Federal immigration authorities said a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot an illegal alien from Mexico during a targeted enforcement operation in Houston on Tuesday after the man used his vehicle to try to run over an agent.

Officers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, whom the agency identified as an illegal immigrant from Mexico, as part of an operation to make an arrest.

ICE said Araujo tried to flee, rammed an ICE vehicle, ignored repeated verbal commands, and then used his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE officer. The officer fired his weapon in what the agency described as self-defense.

The Army announced new body standards for soldiers on July 7 in response to a War Department order targeting military fitness for the battlefield.

The policy will require all soldiers to undergo a waist-to-height ratio assessment twice per year and maintain a ratio of less than 0.55 or be placed in a remedial program to improve physical fitness.

The new standard is the latest move by the Pentagon to improve military fitness standards following Secretary of War Pete Hegseth's order for the department to review its standards in March 2025.
Hegseth directed each of the military services to ensure that fitness standards promote the "strongest and most lethal fighting force on the planet."

The assessment will measure each soldier's waistline in inches at the belly button and divide the measurement by his height in inches to produce the waist-to-height ratio.

If a soldier fails to maintain the ratio requirement, he will be given a second assessment by a different team on the same day to verify the accuracy of the assessment.

The FBI on the evening of July 7 announced a reward of up to $50,000 in exchange for information leading to the arrest of a man allegedly involved in organized criminal activity across the United States, particularly in California, and Canada.

Satinderjeet Singh is accused of being part of the "Lawrence Bishnoi Organized Crime Group," which committed "a variety of violent acts" across the country, the FBI said. It stated that Singh, accused of being the group's leader, has ties in Fresno and Sacramento, California, as well as in Canada, India, and Mexico.

"These acts include assassinations of political and religious figures, shootings, murders, kidnappings, extortions, assaults, and the trafficking of narcotics and weapons," the FBI said.

The National Coffee Association (NCA) asked the Trump administration on July 8 to keep Brazilian green coffee exempt from tariffs during a session of public consultation that is reviewing ‌tariffs on Brazilian imports.

The federal government is holding consultations this week �regarding the Section 301 investigation into Brazilian trade practices. Brazil is the world's largest producer and exporter of coffee, and supplies a third of U.S. needs. The country was hit �by a 50 percent �tariff last year until Washington decided to include green coffee in �a list of exemptions.

The NCA also asked the administration on Wednesday to include instant coffee on the list of tariff-free Brazilian products.

"It is critical for more than 176 million daily U.S. coffee drinkers and our $343 billion coffee economy that any tariffs resulting from the current Special 301 investigations exclude all coffee and coffee products, most of which NCA applauds the administration for having already included in proposed exclusions," NCA President and CEO William Murray said during testimony in Washington.
