Peanut the Squirrel, beloved pet and internet sensation, euthanized after being seized by NY state



Peanut the Squirrel, of internet fame, has been euthanized after the pet was seized by New York state earlier this week, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The seven-year-old gray rescue squirrel, commonly referred to as "P'Nut" on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, was put to death, along with Fred the raccoon, so that the animals could be tested for the presence of rabies.

Peanut was rescued by guardian Mark Longo, after the Connecticut native witnessed P'Nut's mother hit by a car.

The resilient and adorable Peanut inspired Longo to move to upstate New York last year and found "P'Nut's Freedom Farm", an animal sanctuary and rescue operation.

On Wednesday, Peanut, and Fred the racoon, were seized by the Department of Environmental Conservation after multiple anonymous complaints about wild animals living in the Longo house.

"Well internet, you WON," Longo wrote in a caption after the animals were seized. "You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness."

"To the group of people who called DEC, there's a special place in hell for you," Longo added.

In a statement to The Post on Wednesday, the DEC said that they were responding to complaints of a rabies vector species that was in the home, namely, Fred the raccoon.

Former President Donald Trump released a statement on Saturday raging against New York officials after a man's social media sensation pets were euthanized by the state.

Trump made it crystal clear in his statement that he felt the entire effort was a waste of resources, calling Peanut "innocent by all accounts." He also suggested Peanut could have saved his life if he'd gained the ability to speak and communicated to state officials that he is an illegal migrant -

    "There have been horrible reports out of New York, my former home state, where state environmental agents raided the home of Mark Longo and his wife. Mark was taken into custody for hours while officials searched his home and eventually took two of their pets, Fred the Raccoon and Peanut the Squirrel. These animals were later executed by the state of New York.

    New York authorities, under their terrible Governor, put more effort in finding and eliminating a squirrel, who was innocent by all accounts, than they do to control the unchecked illegal immigrants who have flooded their state. If Peanut could have told them he was from Mexico, they would have sent him on his way and given him a hotel room and a $500 gift card to Buddy Squirrel. Instead, he was taken from his family. Very sad, and a complete waste of resources! When we win, we will get our priorities in order and MAGA!"
