Berlin mayor says left-wing arson attack behind massive power outage



An arson attack claimed by a left-wing extremist group has left tens of thousands of residents in Germany's capital without electricity in the dead of winter for several days. The Saturday morning arson attack on critical electricity infrastructure in southwest Berlin cut power to nearly 50,000 homes and businesses, and renewed scrutiny of a long-running sabotage campaign by the left-wing "Vulkangruppe."

According to Stromnetz Berlin, the operator of Berlin's electricity network, power was cut to as many as 45,000 households and more than 2,000 businesses across four districts in south Berlin as temperatures dropped well below freezing.

In a lengthy statement circulated online and called credible by police, the Vulkangruppe said it had deliberately targeted affluent neighborhoods, to "cut the juice to the ruling class."

The group framed the attack as an act of protest against fossil fuel energy use and the growing power demand created by AI data centers, which it said had accelerated climate change and expanded mass surveillance. The statement included an apology to less wealthy residents caught up in the blackout but it expressed no sympathy for wealthy homeowners left without electricity.

Wu Xian, 38, was handcuffed and arrested by local police after pepper-spraying eight protesters, five of whom received hospital treatment, according to the protesters.

Wu owns California-based professional security service company JK Patrol SVC. He holds multiple titles, including chief executive officer and chief financial officer, and also holds a private patrol operator license issued by California's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, according to a database run by the California Department of Consumer Affairs.

A Democrat representative in the Georgia House has resigned her position, as she now faces a federal charge in connection with alleged COVID relief fraud.

On Monday, federal prosecutors filed charges against former state Rep. Karen Bennett, claiming she lied to secure nearly $14,000 in COVID funds.

A man and a woman were shot and injured by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Portland, according to local media reports.

The two people were transported to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, although their conditions were not released to the public.

DHS said in a statement that U.S. Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop that included a "Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring." When the agents identified themselves, the driver "weaponized" the vehicle and tried to run them over.

"Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene," DHS added.

Police investigators said they were horrified to find more than 100 skulls and skeletons at the Pennsylvania home of a man who is now facing nearly 600 criminal charges.

Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse announced in a press conference Thursday that 34-year-old Jonathan Gerlach of Ephrata had been charged with 574 counts, including trespassing, abuse of a corpse, and theft.

Detectives had been on a stakeout at the historic Mount Moriah Cemetery and Arboretum in Yeadon Tuesday when they noticed that a car belonging to Gerlach had "numerous bones and skulls in plain view in the back seat."

They said they saw the man leaving the cemetery with a burlap bag and a crowbar. When he was detained and questioned, Gerlach admitted that he had stolen human remains from 30 grave sites.
