Former Cuban leader Raúl Castro has been indicted on murder charges in the United States, court records unsealed on May 20 show. The move reflects intensifying U.S. pressure on the communist regime as the island grapples with severe economic turmoil.

The charges stem from Castro's alleged role in a 1996 incident in which Cuba shot down two planes belonging to a humanitarian group called Brothers to the Rescue, killing three U.S. citizens and one lawful resident.

The indictment, filed in federal court in Miami, charged Castro and five codefendants with one count of conspiracy to kill US nationals, four counts of murder, and two counts of destruction of aircraft.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) continues to make large-scale drug seizures along the U.S.–Mexico border that far surpass years prior. CBP shared news of one of its latest encounters, where $604,000 worth of cocaine was seized, exclusively with The Epoch Times.

A K-9 alerted to a vehicle attempting to enter the United States at the Hidalgo International Bridge entry in Texas on May 1, and upon searching the car, agents discovered about 45 pounds of suspected cocaine, CBP said.

The driver was identified as a 47-year-old Mexican citizen.
