The name Palestine dates back to the ancient Greeks, somewhere around 5 centuries before Christ and more than a dozen centuries before the muslims appropriated the territory. Even the Romans had recognised the name long before that.

It's mentioned in the old Testament too, but no boundaries are given. But, it wasn't until the second century it was in official use when the Roman province called Judaea was renamed Syria Palaestina.

But, it was not until the 20th century the name was used by the British to refer to "Mandatory Palestine," a territory from the former Ottoman Empire which had been divided in the Sykes–Picot Agreement and secured by Britain via the Mandate for Palestine obtained from the League of Nations. It was only in very recent history the term was stolen from the Israelis and given to the local camel humpers.
