We don't need a poll to tell us the obvious. King Ralph was the most successful politician I have ever seen since I came to Canada. Despite what his critics believe, he was neither right nor left. A true pragmatist that put aside silly ideologies to accomplish the work that needed to be done.

RIP Ralphie!!
QuoteEDMONTON -- Albertans still adore former premier Ralph Klein while Alison Redford is their top choice for worst premier, a new poll shows.

On Friday, Insights West released the results of an online survey conducted that polled 627 Albertans over the age of 18 from July 15 to July 18 on topics related to Heritage Day and found former premiers Klein and Peter Lougheed are Albertans' top two most admired people, living or dead.

Klein and Lougheed were mentioned 163 and 125 times respectively while Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and former Lieutenant Governor Lois Hole were third most admired with 19 mentions each, followed by Edmonton Oilers icon Wayne Gretzky with 17 mentions.

Insights West also asked Albertans to rank the province's premiers since 1985.

"You see Klein running away with it. He's essentially one of the most liked former heads of government over the past three decades but he's also number one when it comes to most admired people. He has two victories here," said Mario Canseco, spokesperson for Insights West.

The late "King Ralph" was the top choice of 59% of Albertans for best former premier, followed by 7% for Don Getty and 4% for Ed Stelmach. Alison Redford was the top choice for worst premier, with 58% of respondents ranking her worse than Klein or Stelmach.

"It's quite shocking considering two years ago we were talking about that wonderful victory, the PCs coming back from behind against the Wildrose who were pegged to win the election, and everybody was saying she was this political genius," said Canseco.

"Now she's out of office and who knows, maybe out of caucus soon."

Insights West also conducted a similar poll in British Columbia, said Canseco, where people chose "beautiful" as the one word they would use to describe their province. Albertans' top choice was "hard-working."

"I thought that was brilliant... We saw a lot of people say 'opportunity' and a lot of people say 'economy' so there's this idea that Alberta, for most people, is the way the people deal with the elements. We're hard-working, we get things done. Yes, we have some nice mountains, but ultimately it's about the way we behave."

I remember when Ralph Klein was the premier and yes times were good then..

But, did he deserve all the credit for that or did he have good luck?

The Lougheed/Getty areas were characterized by irresponsible spending. Peter Lougheed only knew how to govern in good times. When the good times dried up he was still throwing the cash around. When Klein came to power he promised to cut about 1 in 5 dollars in spending which he did. He not only eliminated the deficit, he paid down our debt. He created the sustainability fund to pay for large infrastructure projects.

I never dreamed we would ever get a premier as inept as Redtory. Jim Prentice will probably be the next leader of the party and yes premier.

Oh, I don't know and I don't care either.
