The whole communist Chinese society is in terminal decline.  It turns out when you have a one child policy for 40+ years you aren't running out of children, that happened 40 years ago, they are running out of working aged adults.  That is just how math works.

They are getting wives from the poverty striken farmers in countries on their boarders like Nth Korea. And they didn't really stick to that 1 child policy.... sure some did but not all.

Any thoughts?

They are far from broke. They have the largest foreign exchange reserves in the world(sovereign wealth fund). It's the US that is a lot closer to being broke.

But, the Chinese economy is in trouble. They cannot raise capital on their stock market, foreign investment is a smal fraction of what it was twenty years ago, the real estate market has collapsed in many urban areas, and some of the free market measures implemented by previous leaders have been reversed.

The days of China being the engine of economic growth are over. Demographic declina alone guarantees that. In 2008, demand from China helped lift the world out of the financial crisis that started in the US. They could not do that today.

I really hope India, which is now the most populous nation in the world can pick up some of the slack. They have a whole host of other problems though, so it seems they can maintain thirty years of impressive economic growth like the Asian Tigers and China once did.
