First off, if YOUR country mints a high quality silver or gold coin and you want something universally liquid in a SHTF situation, buy those coins.

If you want something that is liquid and easy to move in a number of countries, buy either Silver Eagles or Cucknadian Maples. Newer than 2013/2014 Cucknadian coins have some added security features that are easily recognizable to the layperson. The American Eagle has security features as well but IMO, the Maple is better.

THE ONLY reason to buy a Mexican Libertad is as a collector coin. Right now, the Mexican silver coins carry a $10 OVER spot price. Yea, thats fukin insane! No thanks! Now if you think their collector value will increase buy and keep some PROPERLY! Be warned tho, when SHTF, they are worth 25% less than what you paid.

actually Lokmeer, I saw a listing on eBay which I questioned as being genuine.

It's a 1918 CANDA gold sovereign in an NGC case.

I was interested in buying it but then caution set in.

so I decided to research it.

Turns out, I found no photo(s) on the NGC website that matched the serial number.

There was also no record of that kind of case ever made by NGC.

I haven't ever seen a case with a back like that with multicolored looking LGBT stripes:



Plus the gold is suspect. Almost looks like gold lacquered paint finish.
It's too dull.



Gold, even high grade, usually has scratches, scuffs or marks on it.
Gold seems to scratch very easily, even more so than silver.

Now....I don't know if my assumptions are correct.
Maybe I'm wrong.

But it seemed to good to be true.

So if 1 ounce is selling for $2105, 1.44 ounces should sell for $3,031.

Actually Prowler I reviewed the specifics of that 5 coin set.

According to the specs provided to me by the Royal Canadian mint COA, the actual weight of the coins is 44.929 grams which is 1.44234 troy ounces.

1 oz - 31.15 g
.25 oz - 7.797 g
.10 oz 3.131 g
.05 oz 1.581 g
.0375 oz 1.270 g

Total weight is 44.929 g, or rounded off 45 g or 1.4423434992 troy ounces.

That comes out to about $4100-4160 Canadian worth of Gold depending who you buy it from a current gold prices.

Gold bullion with 99% content is not taxed in Canada.

I spent about $4200 but unlike the example you cited, I didn't pay postage/handling/taxes/duties - which might be incurred on an eBay order like that.

I admit, I paid a slight premium on the Gold, because it came in a special case and it is high quality polished PROOF or mirror surface gold with protective plastic holders. That is the highest quality gold you can possibly buy anywhere for coins in the world. I think the numerical equivalent is MS-70 PF and it's 99.99% pure gold. Elite gold among gold. Altho Bullion has the same metal content, it might rate at MS-63 or MS-64 when graded.

I realized that I paid just a bit more over the typical bullion price, but that is also lower grade finish, does not come in a case, nor does it have a COA or Certificate of Authenticity. This can be an issue when verifying the authenticty of such coins as I had discussed with Lokmeer. Bullion coins are typically minted in the hundreds of thousands or millions making it more difficult to authenticate them. and as Lokmeer pointed out, counterfeiting is a problem, even with Canadian maple leaf coins, which have some of the highest anti-counterfeiting measures in the world. Some bullion pieces might slip through the cracks.

However, when there is a COA, the coins are much easier to verify and trace. If the COA states 399/750 or 125/750 then you know that those coins belong specifically to that set and numerical sequence.

I bring up because I remember when I bought this set, I carefully calculated the amount of gold by weight to see if it was worth buying.

There is another benefit to this set is its rarity. 750 copies is an extremely low mintage and would be considered 'RARE'. Therefore it has potential to rise in value as the sets are broken up.

So yes, I paid a bit more than the gold value - say about $100 Canadian?
Plus I had the coins assayed for authenticy and gold content on a $30,000 electronic device.

But you know the saying - Ya get what ya paid for.

You don't think I thought this out before buying the coins, but I did.
And it was way less than what the sellers were asking on eBay,

Same time, it might fetch $5000 Canadian or more which translates into a slight profit.

so I'm just providing my rationale for this purchase.
