One big reason is there's not enough of them to meet world demand. And that includes silver I should think since it is also an industrial metal not just for coins and jewelry. Copper seems good too. Lithium as well. Also the supply of platinum is uncertain and a large number of these elements reside in nations where the political situation is uncertain or else they have somewhat frosty relations with the US.
