The objective is simple, completely neuter Iran and beat the shit out of them until they decide they:

Gas prices are still quite low when you consider all the inflation we've had. Thirty years ago you could get a gallon of gas and a Burger King Whopper for a buck each. Now a Whopper is around 8 bucks but gas is still about three bucks in some locations. If gas followed the same price increase as everything else then 8 or 9 dollars a gallon should be the norm.
