If Trump imposes tariffs on Canada, it was Trudeau's choice

I am in favour of tariffs. They work to protect domestic industries.

But, that is a secondary consideration for Trump.

This is what he said in January:

"For far too long, we have relied on taxing our Great People using the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Through soft and pathetically weak Trade agreements, the American Economy has delivered growth and prosperity to the world, while taxing ourselves. It is time for that to change. I am today announcing that I will create the EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE to collect our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources. We will begin charging those that make money off of us with Trade, and they will start paying, FINALLY, their fair share."

He wants to replace income taxes. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick admits as much: He says that Trump's "goal is very simple: To abolish the Internal Revenue Service and let all the outsiders pay."

In retaliation the Trudeau administration has announced a counter tariff of 25 percent more content in American posts.

With the idea that deregulation and the reduction and/or elimination of income taxes would offset the increased costs of tariffs. It sounds okay in theory, but the devil will be in the details.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is obviously a better negotiator than Justine Trudeau.

Donald Trump said Thursday that he has postponed 25% tariffs on most goods from Mexico for a month after a conversation with that country's president.

Also Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated that he expects his country will be in a trade war with the United States for the foreseeable future.

Canada's lack of leadership is causing hardship for the entire country.
