Last week Ottawa quietly approved a salary range of $577,000 to $679,000 for the new head of the federal government's Major Projects Office. That's more than the head of Canada Post or even the president of the CBC.

The appointee, Dawn Farrell, has nearly four decades in the energy sector...senior roles at B.C. Hydro, CEO of TransAlta, and most recently CEO of Trans Mountain. On paper, her resume is impressive. But resumes can be misleading. I've seen executives hailed as stars who left companies financially weaker after they moved on. The full consequences of their decisions only became clear once they were gone.

Mr. Carney says this new Calgary-based office will speed up approvals for major infrastructure projects. If true, that could be a real benefit to the national economy. But with a salary this high, Canadians aren't paying for promises... they're paying for results.

Ms. Farrell is qualified. The problem is that it's too bad that the office and position is really necessary. Many projects should have had the go-ahead a while ago.

Too many Liberal anti-energy laws stand in the way. And it will be impossible to get many energy projects approved by her office until those Trudeau-era laws that Carney advised his predecessor on are repealed.

I don't think the establishment tried to sell Carney's poisonous soul as an average guy. They fooled enough Canadians into believing he is in a league all his own at negotiating and only he can get a good deal for Canada with the US.
