The WRP were born as a result of former premier Ed Stelmach's irresponsible deficit spending and 20% increase in royalties regime during the global financial crisis. Stelmach couldn't have chosen a worse time to jack up resource taxes. Then he committed a second mortal sin....he agreed to run a budget deficit, something most Alberta voters simply will not tolerate.

This movement of Tories to Wildrose accelerated after the selection of Alison Redford as the beleaguered Ed Stelmach's replacement in October 2011. Redford was disdainful of conservative fiscal policies, beholden to public-sector unions for her position and contemptuous of Albertans' views and their tax dollars.

That meant that when the Tories replaced Redford with Jim Prentice, who moved his party back to the right again, there wasn't a paper's width of policy difference with Wildrose.

That made merger or reunion easy on an ideological level.

Here is the reunion agreement.

Jim Prentice is a smart politician. He could see the writing on the wall. Fiscal recklessness in Alberta means a mutiny in the party. I have my doubts about him being a true fiscal conservative, but I do believe he will be forced to govern like one for many reasons. He has an agreement with the WRP, he has slumping revenues and he needs unity. If he plays his cards right and cuts deep and doesn't raise fees too much, when we are returned to higher resource revenues and higher growth rates he could enjoy favouriablity among Albertans like Klein did at the height of his popularity.

BTW, Ralphie was not a real conservative either.

I could not believe my eyes when I read this today. The new premier is a smart politician, but that is true of Smith too.

Can we trade you Wynn for Prentice?

The ladies I work with are worried that Premier Prentice will slash Alberta's civil service the way Ralph Klein did in the 1990's..

I don't pay attention to politics, but if they are right about our new premier then I am worried too.

It is Christmas, but the Alberta Union of Public Employees are worried Mr. Prentice could be Ebeneezer Scrooge.

QuoteDanielle Smith Recall Petition Started By Angry Albertans

A group of angry Albertans have created a website, demanding that the former Wildrose leader resign her seat, forcing a byelection.

The petition reads:

Danielle Smith has broken her promise to voters and abandoned her duties as the leader of the opposition. For years, she condemned the Progressive Conservatives as untrustworthy, corrupt and out of touch with Albertans. Until they offered her a political payoff – and then she jumped ship and joined them.

Smith used to support MLA recall – the right for voters to force a byelection in a riding. She's probably reneged on that belief too, but we haven't.

Smith won her election by promising to oppose the PCs – not to make a secret deal to join them.

Caitlyn Madlener, a co-creator of the website recalldanielle.ca, told Metro Calgary it's time that Smith face statements she's made in the past about being a principled politician.

"Before, she said she believed in recall votes and being able to recall politicians, and we believe she should stick to those principles and allow her constituents to go into a byelection and decide whether or not they want to see her in power before," Madlener said.

Smith explained her defection to reporters Wednesday, saying: "If you're going to be the official Opposition leader, you have to really want to take down the government and really want to take down the premier. I don't want to take down this premier."

^Meh, small time shit theatrics that means nothing. This will all be forgotten and she WILL be re-elected in 2016, you'll see.

Some of the ladies I work with are unhappy with Danielle Smith because they feel she will push a premier who is already not very friendly to the Alberta civil service to be even more antagonistic towards us.

Preston Manning played a role in this unite the right between Wildrose and the PC's. This merger has made the PC's the Wildrose with our fiscally conservative premier abandoning Redford's failed socialism for pragmatic fiscal conservatism. For the first in a long time, I have faith in our provincial leadership.

QuoteA crowdfunding website is raising money for Alberta Wildrose caucus staff who already have or could lose their jobs after their leader and eight others crossed over to the Progressive Conservatives.

A party official says at least two people have already been laid off and others in the Edmonton caucus office are in limbo while the party determines how much legislative funding it will get and whether the workers will be allowed to follow their bosses to the government.

"It just kind of spurred our outrage," said Lisa Hansen-Zacharuk of Drumheller, who set up the page Thursday night on gofundme.com after learning about the layoffs.

The fundraising page, called "Wildrose for Wildrose," had collected more than $11,000 by Friday afternoon.

Dozens of people have so far donated to the site, including supporters of other political parties. Even former NDP leader Brian Mason pitched in $500.

"The timing of this whole affair is about the Grinchiest, Scroogiest thing I can fathom during the holiday season," Jayme Hopkins wrote on the page next to a $40 donation.

Hansen-Zacharuk said the cash will be kept until there's an official list of who has been let go. "Then we'll hand deliver a bit of a Christmas thank you for all the hard work they put in with their former MLA bosses."

The Wildrose party executive has denounced the floor-crossings and said the party will continue on and fight in the next election, slated for 2016.

"It's a pretty bad deal to have happen to you, of course, when the MLA you worked for crosses the floor and then puts their employees out of work, just before Christmas," said Wildrose president Jeff Callaway.

^Yeah, I saw that on Global Edmonton yesterday. It must suck for those handful of employees who lost their jobs, but if they switch their allegiances too perhaps Rachel Notley's dippers, Sherman's Grits or the PC's can find them new jobs. Merry fucking Christmas.
