I got mine so long ago that it expires this year. Unlike the old Arizona drivers license which doesn't expire for 25 years this one only lasts 8 years. Handy little way to raise revenue eh?

First you need a certified copy of your birth certificate, this wasn't difficult but did take three months before I got it from the state I was born in. With a nice little service fee added of course.

Then since my old drivers license wasn't good enough down at the DMV I had to go get something notarized. I gather up the forms and go down to the notary. I give them the forms and they say "Let me see your ID" so they give them my old drivers license. They look at it, say "Okay" and notarize the forms.

So my old ID that wasn't good enough at the DMV was good enough for the notary to sign the papers which were then good enough for the DMV.

Knowing the government I'll probably have to do it all again this year. Better get started now I guess.

I had to go through something like this when my mother died.

I came to Canada when I was a baby. I have copies of my parents' original landing papers. Not enough for the banks but enough for a notary of the public who signed them(for $250) and then miraculously it was enough for the bank to release my portion of my inheritance.
