A significant portion of Venezuelan socialist leader Nicolás Maduro's security team was killed in the U.S. operation that led to the leader's capture, Venezuelan Defense Minister General Vladimir Padrino López in a news conference on Jan. 4.

While López didn't provide a figure of the casualties, he backed the Venezuelan Supreme Court declaration that Vice President Delcy Rodríguez serve as interim president and said armed forces were activated across the country.

He said in a live video address that "much of" Maduro's "security team" as well as soldiers and civilians, were killed in the operation, according to a translation from Spanish.

Nicolas Maduro out of power is good and bad for my former country. It will cut imports of drugs. However, Venezuelan oil will now be able to compete with Canadian heavy oil reducing the price Alberta gets.

It also weakens the chance of Alberta and Saskatchewan's secession being a precursor to adoption into the United States. Which I kind of figured would go nowhere given the memes regarding how those two provinces were getting fucked over had way more traction than any actual movement to do anything concrete about the situation.

I've said it before, I'll say it again; Canadians are too damned nice for their own fucking good. Instead of piss-assing about with a bunch of "woe is us", a concerted effort to secede from Canada might have seen the fortunes of citizens like Herman improved immeasurably and deservedly. I feel like Trump would have taken them in at a time when the largest oil reserve on the planet was still being mismanaged by socialist interests, but as I remarked at the time this would have necessitated direct action from the provinces concerned to meet him halfway. Instead, the premiers of AB & SK effectively ran out the clock negotiating with Conman Carney and the wealth of those oil sand... while considerable... are as an afterthought in the face of what Venezuela can bring to the table.

I've gone back and forth a few times on whether I want Alberta and Saskatchewan to be an independent republic or the fifty first state. Since Venezuela is now the de facto fifty first state, I have gone back to wanting an independent prairie republic.

Trump has told oil producers that if they want their assets back that were seized by Chavez and Maduro they must first build back their energy infrastructure.
