Some 3,000 workers at Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) have voted to strike beginning on March 16, according to their union.



The potential labor disruption at one of Canada's largest railways threatens to upend global supplies of fertilizer just as farmers need nutrients to plant spring crops.



Canada, along with Russia and Belarus, is one of the main sources for the world's potash, a commonly used fertilizer that contains potassium. A potential work stoppage comes amid concerns of shortfalls in supplies amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine and economic sanctions on both Russia and its ally Belarus.



Management at CP Rail has offered wage increases for a two-year collective agreement and agreed to 20 union demands. However, the union is not satisfied with the proposals and concessions from management and has now voted in favor of a work stoppage.

The price of a litre of gasoline was $1.55.9 today..



Vegetables, meat, household consumables are going up all the time..



I hope a strike can still be averted.

This was an internal message from our CEO on our employee website.



 

Since last September, Canadian Pacific (CP) has been negotiating in good faith with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC), which represents approximately 3,000 locomotive engineers, conductors, trainmen and yardmen across Canada. Our positions remain far apart and the management of the CFTC has announced to its members that it has received a strike mandate.



CP has an excellent track record when it comes to collective bargaining with its unions; unfortunately, the CFTC has used federal conciliators in eight out of nine rounds of collective bargaining since 1993. We have offered a fair and balanced agreement with wage increases, and have accepted 20 union demands for relates to benefits and working conditions to provide our people with greater certainty and stability over the next two years.



The main issue at the bargaining table is the increase in benefit ceilings requested by CFTC management. These caps were introduced in 2012 to secure CP's defined benefit pension plan and ensure its sustainability. These ceilings ensure the maintenance of the pension plan by guaranteeing its solvency and its long-term viability, for both retirees and current employees.



CFTC management is calling for these caps to be increased so that CFTC members, who represent less than 10% of plan members, can benefit from the small surpluses currently in the pension plan, to the detriment of other plan members and the stability of the diet in general.



The Canadian economy and its supply chains need stability. If the CFTC exercises its right to strike, we will not be able to operate our network. A strike, no matter how long, will affect virtually all goods moving through the Canadian supply chain and will weaken the country's trade-dependent economy.



For the sake of our business and the supply chain we serve, we simply cannot tolerate uncertainty; therefore, we may be forced to take the undesirable decision to go into lockdown in the coming weeks.



It's about doing what's best for all CP employees over the long term and for the broader economy that depends on them.

69 years ago today, Soviet Leader and murderous dictator Joseph Stalin left the ranks of the living and found his new accomodations in hell. The conflict unfolding today in Ukraine is partially from the very actions of this man in his hatred for the Ukranian people with his policies of immense repression and even deliberately induced famine in Ukraine in the 1930's to kill as many of them as possible. Many overlook this due to his position during the second world War, it is a fitting reminder of the excesses of unparalleled power, control over people and what consequences that has.

B.C. Premier John Horgan's government is hiking sales taxes on essentials like used cars and natural gas appliances.



The tax changes mean that when you buy a natural gas appliance, instead of paying the usual seven per cent PST, you will now get hit with a 12 per cent tax! This applies to things such as furnaces, hot water tanks and stoves.  

 

Why? Because the Horgan government wants to punish people for using natural gas appliances and try to force them to buy electric heat pumps instead.

 

There's more bad tax hikes out of Victoria.

 

Now, when you buy a used car in B.C, instead of paying between seven and 12 per cent PST on the price you actually paid for the vehicle, you will be forced to pay the sales tax based on what an ICBC bureaucrat thinks the car is worth instead.



If you get a good deal on a used car, the government won't believe you, and it will decide what you should have paid and tax you on that instead.

A box containing human heads intended for scientific research was stolen from a freight truck in Denver, Colorado, last week, according to police.



The incident occurred sometime between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning while the truck was parked in Denver's Central Park neighborhood, the Denver Post reported. That's when thieves allegedly broke into the truck and made off with the human specimens and a dolly.
