Supreme Court chief justice directs marshal to investigate leak, calls out 'egregious breach of ... trust'

Chief Justice John Roberts called the leak a 'betrayal of the confidences of the Court'

In a brief message, the court acknowledged that the leaked document is indeed real, while noting that it is just a draft and that the court has not issued a final decision on the matter.

"Justices circulate draft opinions internally as a routine and essential part of the Court's confidential deliberative work. Although the document described in yesterday's reports is authentic, it does not represent a decision by the Court or the final position of any member on the issues in the case," the court said.

Damn eh.

The Ontario Party is launching a full slate of candidates in Ontario's June 2 election. Unhappy with the Liberal lite way Ford is running Ontario, they could cost him some seats by stealing votes that would otherwise go to the Ontario PC's.

Roe v Wade could be overturned?

I never thought it would happen.

I personally think it should be.  Only allowed for a medical necessity.  Seems to me that ending a life by choice is a homicide, unless it's self defense.

I'm not aware of all the applicable legal issues though.

I'm pro life personally, but I don't believe in imposing my faith on a secular society.

The "Birds Aren't Real" movement, which claims the government killed billions of birds and replaced them with surveillance drones to monitor citizens, is actually a parody intended to poke fun at other bizarre online conspiracies.

Canada's biggest food retailer, Loblaws says people are shopping for groceries more often but buying less and shifting to discount stores as pandemic restrictions loosen and inflation soars.

The Federal Reserve delivered the biggest hike in interest rates since 2000 and announced it would start shrinking its massive balance sheet next month, deploying the most aggressive tightening of monetary policy in decades to combat soaring inflation.

"Inflation is much too high and we understand the hardship it is causing and we are moving expeditiously to bring it back down," Chair Jerome Powell told reporters following the decision, holding his first in-person press conference since the pandemic. Powell added that there was "a broad sense on the committee that additional 50 basis-point increases should be on the table for the next couple of meetings."

The increase in the FOMC's target for the federal funds rate, to a range of 0.75 per cent to 1 per cent, follows a quarter-point hike in March that ended two years of near-zero rates to help cushion the U.S. economy against the initial blow from COVID-19.

Policy makers, who widely signalled their intention to step up the pace of rate increases, are trying to curb the hottest inflation since the early 1980s. Back then, Chair Paul Volcker raised rates as high as 20 per cent and crushed both inflation and the broader economy in the process. The Fed's hope this time around is that the combination of higher borrowing costs and a shrinking balance sheet will deliver a soft landing that avoids recession while tamping down inflation.

Investors had been increasingly betting the FOMC will opt for an even bigger rate increase, of three quarters of a percentage point, when it next meets in June — which would be the largest single hike since 1994. While officials have so far downplayed that idea, several have in recent weeks expressed a desire to "expeditiously" bring the federal funds rate to around 2.5 per cent by the end of the year, a level they deem roughly "neutral" for the U.S. economy.
