It's the Arctic Challenger, a Shell Oil barge designed to contain oil well blowouts.

... yes, it does look scientific, RW!  yet it also looks very INDUSTRIAL at the same time ...



... and to answer Fashionista's query, i'm guessing it was doing what the other barges do when they go around in circles in front of my house: they dump waste into the ocean ...

You would be far more likely to see a little fishing boat or pleasure craft flout do that shit than an industrial vessel of any kind.

I can't help wondering why it was built so low in the water. I doesn't look like it could handle even minor rough waters ... not to mention the huge forces upon  the crane in rough water

... great post, ceece!  i agree, it looks like it would be VERY unsafe in rough waters.  the water was calm the weekend it was here, but i wish i'd got to see how it looked out there when the weather changed this week ...

My husband has been on offshore drilling rigs the shark hunter..



They are actually quite safe.

The rigs are usually quit e safe in rough seas. Ihis low in the water scow, I don't think so
