Prior to the 19th Century, the vast majority of music composed, sung or performed in Western Civilzation was religiously based. The rise of 'secular music'  without a religious context has been a relatively recent development. It emerged in Western Europe during the renaissance, then accelerated in the 18th and 19th centuries. Folk music of the common people was not considered respectable and disdained by the musical establishment. This may have been due to its origins, as it belonged to the peasant or working classes.

Society's acceptance of 'common music' and its takeover from religiously based may have begun in the United States in the 19th century. The emergence of popular music which was derived largely from slave music which had its origins in Africa. It was their cultural influence which led to the development of the Blues, Jazz and eventually Rock and Roll and today's derivatives - such as Hip Hop, Rap, etc.

Religious music has taken a back seat as the societal norm where it was once dominant.

QuoteO Thou That Tellest

by Georg Fredrich Haendel

from The Messiah

◆ALTO

O thou that tellest good tiding to Zion,

get thee up into the high mountain,

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,

get thee up into the high mountain,

get thee up into the high mountain,

O thou that tellest good tiding to Jerusarem,

Lift up thy voice with strength, lift up, be not afraid,

say unto the cities of Judah,

say unto the cities of Judah:

Be hold your God, be hold your God!

Say unto the cities of Judah:

Be hold your God, be hold your God, be hold your God!

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,

Arise, shine, for thy light is come,

Arise, arise, arise, shine, for thy light come,

And the glory of the Lord,

The glory of the Lord is risen, is risen upon thee, is risen, is risen upon thee,

The glory, the glory, the glory of the Lord is riseen upon thee.

◆Chorus

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,

good tidings to Jerusalem,

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,

good tidings to Zion, arise, arise,

Say unto the cities of Judah; Behold your God,

behold, the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,

say unto the cities of Judah:

Behold, behold, the glory of the Lord,

of the Lord, the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

Here's a concerto by Italian Baroque Composer Claudio Monteverdi  made from a passage in the Bible, Psalm 150 dated 1640. Laudate Dominum

Latin:

QuoteLaudáte Dóminum in sanctis ejus ;

laudáte eum in firmaménto virtútis ejus.

2 Laudáte eum in virtútibus ejus ;

laudáte eum secúndum multitúdinem magnitúdinis ejus.

3 Laudáte eum in sono tubæ ;

laudáte eum in psaltério et cíthara.

4 Laudáte eum in týmpano et choro ;

laudáte eum in chordis et órgano.

5 Laudáte eum in cýmbalis benesonántibus ;

laudáte eum in cýmbalis jubilatiónis.

6 Omnis spíritus laudet Dóminum !

Allelúja.

"Psalm 150" in English

QuoteLet everything that has breath praise the Lord

(Let everything that has breath praise the Lord)

Sound the alarm to our most high God

(Praise the Lord, oh praise the Lord!)

Praise Him for His excellent greatness

(Praise Him for His excellent greatness)

With the cymbals and stringed instruments

(Praise the Lord, oh praise the Lord!)

Let our praise ring, be glorified, be glorified

Lord, we praise Your name!

Just like David, we'll praise in a-dancing

(Just like David, we'll praise in a dance)

Praise Him with lifting and clapping of hands

(Praise the Lord, oh praise the Lord!)

Bow down before You in majesty

(Bow down before You in majesty)

We declare Your name is holy

(Praise the Lord, oh praise the Lord!)

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord,

Praise the Lord!

Sound the alarm to our most high God

Oh, praise the Lord!

Lord, inhabit our praise

Let our praises of Your name

Dwell among us, oh God

And live in our praise.

Lord, inhabit our praise

Let our praises of Your name

Dwell among us, oh God

And live in our praise, in our praise,

Praise Your name!

Hallelujah, hallelujah...

Hallelujah, hallelujah...

Hallelujah, hallelujah...

Release your praise, all the nations rejoice.

[2x]

Hallelujah, hallelujah...

Hallelujah, hallelujah...

Hallelujah, hallelujah...

Release your praise... release your praise...

Release your praise, all the nations rejoice!

All Good Gifts

from Godspell

sung by Merrel Jackson

QuoteWe plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land..

But it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand..

He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain...

The breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain...

All good gifts around us

Are sent from Heaven above

Then thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord for all his love...

We thank thee then, O Father, for all things bright and good,

The seedtime and the harvest, our life, our health, our food,

No gifts have we to offer for all thy love imparts

But that which thou desirest, our humble thankful hearts!

All good gifts around us

Are sent from Heaven above..

Then thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord for all his love..

I really wanna thank you Lord

i want to thank you

thank you for all of your love

Oh thank you lord

oh lord
