China will work closely with the Asian Development Bank towards its carbon dioxide emission reduction targets, after they jointly launched a plan for using carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology on Tuesday. This was announced on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris.

The CCS technology enables a process of capturing CO2 from fossil fuel power plants, and transporting it to a storage site, which prevents the release of large quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere. The plan proposes that China gradually deploys CCS technology from 2015 to 2050.

There are currently nine small CCS pilot projects in operation in the country. The challenge is to scale up and commercialize these projects.

"As we all know, Beijing has had a serious smog problem in the last few days. This reminds us of the urgency and necessity of facing climate change problems and adapting measures to protect the environment. Therefore, China has set its own national undertakings, and it is what China needs,"  China's special envoy on climate change Xie Zhenhua said.
