Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter dies at 100

Former President Jimmy Carter, a man who redefined what a post-presidency could be, died Sunday. He was 100.

His son, Chip Carter confirmed that the former president died at his home in Plains about 3:45 p.m.

Carter, who lived longer than any other U.S. president, entered home hospice care in Plains, Georgia in February 2023 after a series of short hospital stays.

The only Georgian ever elected to the White House, Carter left office after a single term that was highlighted by forging peace between Israel and Egypt, but was overshadowed by the Iran hostage crisis. In the decades after, his reputation grew through his and wife Rosalynn Carter's work at the Carter Center in Atlanta and his philanthropic causes such as Habitat for Humanity.

Carter began volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, a fairly new Americus-based organization, building houses for the poor. Then, together with Rosalynn, he founded the Atlanta-based Carter Center, which focused on making peace and spreading health and democracy around the world. It will carry the couple's humanitarian and democratic work forward.

From his work as president and as the leader of the Carter Center, he won the Nobel Prize, the United National Human Rights Prize and many other notable awards from countries, organizations and world leaders. The Carters both were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton.

"Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter," Clinton said, "have done more good things for more people in more places than any other couple on the face of the Earth."

Rosalynn Carter, Jimmy Carter's wife of 77 years, died in November 2023.

They are survived by their children Amy, Chip, Jack and Jeff; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Anita Bryant, a popular singer who became known for opposition to gay rights, dies at age 84

Anita Bryant, a former Miss Oklahoma, Grammy-nominated singer and prominent booster of orange juice and other products who became known over the second half of her life for her outspoken opposition to gay rights, has died. She was 84.

Bryant died Dec. 16 at her home in Edmond, Oklahoma, according to a statement posted by her family to news site The Oklahoman on Thursday. The family did not list a cause of death.

Bryant was a Barnsdall native who began singing at an early age, and was just 12 when she hosted her own local television show. She was named Miss Oklahoma in 1958 and soon began a successful recording career. Her hit singles included "Till There Was You," "Paper Roses" and "My Little Corner of the World." A lifelong Christian, she received two Grammy nominations for best sacred performance and one for best spiritual performance, for the album "Anita Bryant ... Naturally."

But in the late 1970s, her life and career began a dramatically new path. Unhappy with the cultural changes of the time, Bryant led a successful campaign to repeal an ordinance in Florida's Miami-Dade County that would have prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation. Supported by the Rev. Jerry Falwell among others, Bryant and her "Save Our Children" coalition continued to oppose gay rights around the country, denouncing the "deviant lifestyle" of the gay community.

'Blue Velvet,' 'Twin Peaks' Director David Lynch Dies at 78

David Lynch -- the legendary director of "Twin Peaks" has died ... TMZ has confirmed.

A family member tells TMZ that Lynch passed away Wednesday at his daughter's house -- where he was staying during the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.

Lynch started directing in the late 1960s -- gaining national recognition in 1977 when he wrote and directed the surrealist horror film "Eraserhead."

His career accelerated in the 1980s ... when Lynch released "The Elephant Man" and "Dune" before "Blue Velvet" -- the neo-noir thriller starring Isabella Rossellini and Kyle MacLachlan, the latter of whom would become a frequent collaborator with Lynch.

Lynch kicked off the 1990s by making the move to television in the early 1990s to direct the cult classic TV show "Twin Peaks" which spawned a movie and a 2017 reboot. He was nominated for his third and final Academy Award nomination for directing in 2002 for "Mulholland Drive." He was presented with an honorary Academy Award in 2019.

Twin Peaks was a strange, but good series.  It got cancelled way too early.

I saw an episode or two, but I cannot for the life of me remember what the show was about.
