I contracted the meat allergy (Alpha-gal allergy) via a tick bite about 3.5 years ago. It's been the bane of my existence ever since.

Regular grass ticks will also pass on the allergy, but to a lesser extent. Mine was undoubtedly passed on to me by the notorious Paralysis Tick...it's the Australian equivalent of the Lone Star Tick. In my case I unfortunately only learnt of my allergy when I began to go into Anaphylactic Shock and my missus helped me off the bathroom floor after hearing me cracking my head when I passed out off the toilet. It was 'orrible!

I'm sure it was. My bites were not that dramatic.

Nor were mine at first. I started getting the rashes and IBS symptoms over a few weeks and basically put it down to a stomach bug of sorts. But the more mammalian meat I consumed over time, the more my symptoms were compounding...until it was nearly all too late.

Like hives. They started out just below my chest and above the vicinity of my stomach ball. Then I started getting them on both arms. As things got worse my entire body from feet to scalp was covered.



Weeks prior the rashes started out by just the act of rubbing on soap in the shower. The skin becomes hypersensitive to contact, heat, sun etc.

My regular golf course backs on to a crown owned wooded area. I have not heard anything about ticks being a problem in my area. I hope they are not. If they are, I hope they don't like East Asian flesh.

Ironically the area where I was bitten backed onto State National Park. The ticks proliferate on all the wildlife and the plants make great nesting areas. A tick can remain motionless awaiting a host to brush past for up to a year or more.

Yeah it's not nice. But at least I can save most people from undergoing all the blood tests etc, as I know the symptoms well. The professor who diagnosed me, because the hospital couldn't at the time, cost me over $500 in consultation.
